Korea is rapidly changing from a monolingual and monocultural society to a quite multilingual and multicultural country since 1990. This is mainly the result of labor migration and intermarriage. With the increase of immigrant families, it is urgently required to establish language education policy including the education of immigrant children. We should recognize the ethnic, linguistic and cultural diversity of these children as members of Korean society and ensure that they have equal rights in all areas of society. The language education policy based on multiculturalism is very important for the immigrant children to recognize their identity and cultural traditions, to improve their self-esteem and to integrate harmoniously into Korean society and culture. In 2016, over 2.3 million people in Sweden were estimated to have immigrant background, comprising about 23% of the whole population of the country. Sweden has long been conducted bilingual education, for example mother tongue instruction and Swedish as a second language. The purpose of this paper is to give a short description of multicultural language policy in Sweden and thereby to make a contribution to the multicultural language education policy for immigrant children in Korea.

다문화/다인종 사회로 급속하게 전환하고 있는 한국 사회는 다문화 가정의 증가와 더불어 이들 자녀들의 한국어교육을 포함한 언어교육정책 수립이 절실하게 요구된다. 한국 사회의 한 구성원인 다문화 가정 아동들의 문화적, 민족적, 인종적 다양함을 인정하고 존중해주며 이들이 사회의 모든 영역에서 동등한 권리를 갖도록 해야 한다. 다문화 가정 아동들의 정체성과 문화전통이 인정되어 그들의 자존감이 향상되고 한국 사회와 문화에 조화롭게 적응하여 통합되기 위해서는 다문화주의에 기반한 언어교육정책이 매우 중요하다. 다문화/다인종 가정이 인구의 20% 이상을 차지하고 있는 스웨덴은 이미 오래전부터 이중/다중언어 환경에서 성장하는 아이들의 모국어교육과 제2언어로서의 스웨덴어교육 등을 실시하고 있다. 본 논문은 스웨덴의 현재 언어현황과 학교교육제도에 대해 개괄적으로 다루며 또한 다문화 언어교육정책에는 무엇이 있으며 어떻게 실행되고 있는 지를 고찰함으로써 한국 언어교육정책의 연구와 수립에 도움이 되고자 한다.
