Whittemore was a pioneer missionary who established churches in the Pyongbuk Province. He came Korea for the first time on Oct. 26, 1896, and visited to Suncheon on 1987, and initiated the evangelical movement of the Pyongbuk. Since 1901, he has built a mission station at Suncheon as he devoted his life for Suncheon area. As a result, the Suncheon station has made remarkable progress and started to lead the missions in Pyongbuk Province. In addition, he charged Eujoo mission field as he planed to generate mission work of Northern area. In particular, he traveled to Kanggye Province and Manchuria in 1902 and 1912 in order to lay the foundations for this mission. His passion for evangelism has made the Suncheon as the barren to be the Jerusalem of Korea, and he has established a tremendousachievement in the evangelization of the Pyonbuk Province. This research delves into the early missionary work of missionary Whittemore. This study focuses on his ministry of the Suncheon in the Pyonbuk area. Thus, this paper discusses how the Christian churches in Pyongbuk were initiated, grew and developed under the guidance and management of missionaries.

휘트모어 선교사는 평안북도 일대의 교회를 세운 개척선교사였다. 그는 1896년 10월 26일 내한하여 1897년 처음으로 선천을 방문한 후, 선천을 중심한 평북 일대의 구령 운동에 투신하였다. 1901년부터는 선천에 선교지부를 세우고, 이곳에 거주하면서 이 지역선교를 개척하는 일에 혼신의 힘을 다하였다. 그 결과 선천선교지부는 놀라운 발전을 이룩하며 평북지역선교를 주도하기 시작했다. 또한 그는 1902년부터 1907년까지 의주지역 선교책임을 맡아 북방선교 개척에 헌신하였다. 특히 그는 1902년과 1912년 강계지방과 만주지역을 답사하여 이 지역 선교의 기초를 놓았다. 이러한 그의 복음전도의 열정은 불모지 같은 선천을 한국의 예루살렘으로 만들었으며, 평북지역의 복음화에 혁혁한 공을 세웠다. 본 논문은 이러한 휘트모어의 선교사의 초기 선교사역을 다룬다. 특히 선천을 중심으로 한 평북지역에서의 그의 사역을 중점적으로 다루고자 한다. 또한 이 논문은 선교사들의 지도와 관리아래 평안북도 지역의 기독교회가 어떻게 생성하고, 성장했으며, 발전하여 갔는지를 다루고자 한다.
