The Smile of May by Gisuk Song plainly reveals the state of the city of Gwangju in May. State violence that is revealed through the memory of the character Chanwoo Jung appears as a brutal, indiscriminate force to the public. This physical violence is changed into another violence, the torture, to forge the victims into the offenders after eventually subduing the resistance violence in the provincial office. Through this kind of actual shaping process, the author Song wants to criticize the dictatorship and reveal the historical truth. The Resistance violence appeared to be accidental but inevitable in front of the unfair state violence. What is used in the resistance violence in the novel are stones, songs, carbine guns, and M1 rifles, etc. With this tough, disadvantageous circumstance, the citizens of Gwangju create the power for themselves and the non-violent community. Already knowing the last struggle in the provincial office would lead them to death, the citizens face it with resolution, which is thought to be tragic but noble. The author lead us to see the people of then Gwangju as they are, not in the any ideology nor any discourse. The author Song proposes revenge and reconciliation as a way of healing the wounds from the tragic historical event, the Gwangju Uprising. The emotions of the victims ask the offenders to be punished, and there appears a variety of preparations for the punishment, which is shaped in the killing incident of Chiho Ha. The author’s intension can be heard through the mouth of some characters in this event, to make the event a starting point for the offender to realize that he has done something terribly wrong. The reconciliation is shaped as the ritual for the marriage in the other world, in which the author present a path to reconciliation and co-existence. What catches our eyes in this shaping is the former airborne trooper, the bride, is described as another victim. Furthermore, shaping people trying to disturb the marriage, Song shows the actual difficulty of reconciliation. The novel shapes, with the technique of realism, a sheer criticism to the unfair state authority, the historical truth distorted for a long time, the citizens wretched under the state violence, and the citizens overcoming the brutal time. In addition, It is meaningful that this novel presents a literary consideration and a solution to the matter of the revenge and the reconciliation, which is not yet solved in ‘Gwangju in May’.

송기숙이 쓴 『오월의 미소』에는 ‘5월 광주’의 모습이 적나라하게 드러나고 있다. 정찬 우라는 한 개인의 기억을 통해 드러나는 국가폭력은 국민에게 야만적이고 무차별적인 폭력의 모습으로 나타났다. 이 물리적 폭력은 도청에서의 저항폭력을 마지막으로 진압한 이후 피해자들을 폭력을 행사한 가해자로 바꾸기 위해 고문이라는 또 다른 폭력으로 변화했다. 이러한 사실적 기법의 형상화를 통해서 송기숙은 독재정권에 한 비판과 역 사적 진실을 드러내고자 했다. 부당한 국가폭력 앞에 저항폭력은 우발적이지만 필연적으로 나타났다. 『오월의 미소』 에서 드러나는 저항폭력의 수단으로는 돌멩이, 노래, 카빈, M1 등이 있었다. 하지만 시민들은 불리한 상황 속에서도 스스로를 위한 권력을 창출하고 비폭력적 공동체 사회를 이뤄냈다. 더불어 도청의 마지막 항쟁이 결국 죽음이라는 것을 알고 있었지만 의연하게 맞서는 시민들의 모습은 비장미뿐만 아니라 숭고미마저 드러난다고 할 수 있다. 작가는 그 당시 있었던 사람들의 모습을 어떤 이념이나 담론에 포획되는 않는 있는 그로 그려 내고 있다. 작가는 5·18 광주항쟁 때 입은 상처를 치유하는 방법으로 응징과 화해를 제시하고 있다. 소설에 등장하는 피해자들의 정서는 기획자들에 한 응징이 필요하다고 느끼고 있으며 그 응징을 준비하는 여러 가지 모습이 나타난다. 그 모습 중 하나가 김중만의 하치호 살해사건으로 형상화됐다. 이 응징을 통해서 가해자가 피해자가 되어 자신의 행 동이 잘못됐음을 깨닫는 계기가 되기를 바라는 작가의 의도가 등장인물의 입을 통해서 드러나고 있다. 화해는 저승혼사굿으로 형상화되었다. 작가는 공수단인 신랑과 그 피해 자인 신부 사이의 혼인을 통해 화해와 상생을 제시하고 있다. 이 형상화에서 주목할 점은 공수단을 가해자가 아닌 또 다른 피해자로 제시하고 있다는 것이다. 더불어 작가는 이에 그치지 않고 그 혼인을 옆에서 방해하는 모습을 형상화함으로써 화해의 현실적 어려움을 보여주고 있다. 이 작품은 부당한 국가 권력에 한 날카로운 비판을, 왜곡된 역사의 진실을, 국가폭 력 앞에 처참했던 시민들의 모습을, 그리고 그 처참함 속에서도 견뎌냈던 그들의 모습을 사실주의 기법을 활용하여 형상화했으며, 더 나아가 이 작품은 ‘오월 광주’에서 아직 미해결로 남아 있는 응징과 화해라는 문제를 문학적으로 고민하고 해결책을 제시했다는 데 그 의의가 있다.
