The purpose of this study is to present the name of vocational high school that can remove a negative recognition about vocational high school and clear the identity of vocational high school. To achieve the purpose of this study, an extensive analysis on the literature, questionnaire survey, expert meeting were conducted.
Major findings of this study are as follows:
(1) If we want to improve the negative recognition about vocational high school, to change the name of vocational high school with 'gitagae high school' is more effective than to change the only name of vocational high school. 'Gitagae high school' is the one type of high school except general high school and vocational high school.
(2) 'Jeonmungae high school'(=special high school) is more suitable name of vocational high school than 'teugseonghwa high school'(=specialized high school). The reason is that 'special' is comparative concept with 'general'.
(3) 'Jeonmun high school' is more suitable name of vocational high school than 'jeonmungae high school'. The reason is that 'cheonmoon high school' is more clear and concise than 'jeonmungae high school'.
This study suggests 'jeonmun high school' as the best name of vocational high school plus 'gitagae high school'.

본 연구는 실업계 고등학교의 정체성을 분명히 하면서, 동시에 실업계 고등학교에 대한 부정적인 인식을 불식할 수 있는 실업계 고등학교의 명칭을 구안하는데 목적이 있다. 이런 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해 직업교육 패러다임 변화, 실업계 고등학교의 정당성 및 정체성에 관한 문헌을 분석하였으며, 설문지를 통해 실업계 고등학교의 명칭 변경에 대한 의견을 조사하였다. 또한 연구 진행시 주요 사항에 대한 자문 및 해결 방안을 모색하기 위하여 전문가 협의회를 진행하였다.
본 연구의 결과를 요약하면, 첫째, 실업계 고등학교에 대한 사회의 부정적 인식을 개선하기 위해서는 실업계 고등학교만의 명칭을 바꾸는 것보다는 기타계 고등학교와 통합하여 그 명칭을 바꾸는 방안이 더 효과적이다. 둘째, ‘전문계 고등학교’와 ‘특성화 고등학교’ 중 새로운 명칭으로 더 적합한 것은 ‘전문계 고등학교’이다. 그 이유는 ‘일반계 고등학교’의 ‘일반’이라는 단어와 대비되는 개념으로서 ‘전문’이라는 용어가 더 적합하기 때문이다. 셋째, ‘전문계 고등학교’라는 명칭보다는 용어의 명확성 및 간결성을 고려하여, ‘전문 고등학교’로 하는 것이 적절하다.
본 연구에서는 설문 조사, 면담 조사 및 전문가 협의회 등의 결과를 종합하여, 실업계 고등학교와 기타계 고등학교를 합해서 ‘전문 고등학교’로 명칭을 변경하는 것을 최적 안으로 제시하였다.
