The purpose of this study is to consider the election abstention factor of Korean-American in the overseas Korean election. The method of study carried out the survey for Korean-American and utilized for the analysis of the dissertation. The results of the study are as follows. First, this study showed by age, by dwelling period, local, and various characteristics of Korean-American. Second, the abstention factor of Overseas Korean Election was 'korea is left and lived' 'it is busy and the registration procedure is complicated' 'the Overseas Korean Election is do not know well' 'the polling place is far' etc. Third, as a result of analysis of the abstention reason, the abstention rate showed highly as the US permanent resident and age was high. In Conclusion, the various way of voting has to be introduced including the internet vote, polling place magnification, mail vote and etc. solving the abstention factor of the Overseas Korean Election.

이 연구의 목적은 재외국민선거에서 재미한인의 선거기권요인을 고찰하는데 있다. 연 구방법은 2016년 3월 미국 뉴욕 뉴저지와 버지니아 메릴랜드에 거주하는 재미한인을 대 상으로 설문조사를 실시하여 174부를 수집하여 본 논문의 분석에 활용하였다. 분석결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 본 조사의 인구통계학적 특성은 연령대별로 40대에서 60대에 이르기까지 다양한 분포를 보이고 있으며 미국거주 기간은 20년 미만의 뉴커머, 직업별 특징은 직장인과 자영업자가 66.1%, 그리고 대부분이 미국영주권자로 뉴저지 주 에 거주하는 비율이 높았다. 둘째, 재외국민선거 기권이유에 대한 질문결과 재미한인들 은 미국 영주권자로서 ‘한국을 떠나 미국에 사니까’, 자영업자와 직장인들이 많은 관계 로‘ 바쁘고 등록절차가 복잡해서’,‘ 재외국민선거가 무엇인지 잘 몰라서’,‘ 투표소가 멀 어서’ 라는 응답이 많았다. 셋째, 재외국민선거 기권이유에 대한 차이분석결과, 체류신 분에서 영주권자와 연령대가 높을수록 재외국민선거에 대한 기권율이 높은 것으로 나타 났다. 결론적으로 재외국민선거 기권사유가 ‘일상생활이 바쁘고 등록절차가 복잡하다’는 의견이 다수를 차지하고 있기 때문에 재외국민선거에서 이러한 문제점을 해결할 수 있는 인터넷투표, 투표소확대, 우편투표 등의 다양한 투표방법이 도입되어야 함을 시사하고 있다.
