The US Census Bureau estimated the total Korean American population at more than 1.8 million in 2012. The highest concentration of Koreans resides in Los Angeles County, California where the population reached 217,260 in 2014. Symbolically, the heart of the Korean American community is in Los Angeles. Known as Koreatown, this transnational enclave gained popularity over the years and by the early 2000s, Korean culture and food hit mainstream-American society hard. Korean barbeque, Korean dramas and music, and even Korean American actors took the American pop-culture scene by surprise. Korean immigrants also established several“ suburban Koreatown” in Southern California in search of better school districts and employment opportunities. The purpose of this article is to trace history of evolution of Koreatown in Los Angeles and Southern California. The formation of Los Angeles Koreatown began late 1960s along Olympic Boulevard and several Korean businesses catering Korean immigrants opened in early 1970s such as Olympic Market, VIP restaurant, and VIP Plaza. By early 1980, the City of Los Angeles designated Vermont-Western and Olympic-8th Street as "Koreatown." This article explores following questions: How did Koreatown in Los Angeles transformed from isolated ethnic enclave to center of transnational and multiracial enclave? Why and how Korean immigrants dispersed and establish "suburban Koreatown" in Southern California? What roles do non-profit organizations play in supporting and shaping Korean immigrant community in Southern California?
