The city is a place where society's changes over time are compressed and materialized, and images of changing cities have appeared in various forms across diverse artistic genres. Photography, whose birth coincided with the advent of modern cities, has been the preferred medium for the portrayal of cities due to its ability to capture and reproduce moments with objective detachment, making it an ideal tool for documenting the endless cycle of creation and destruction that characterizes urban landscapes. This study was inspired by an investigation of the relationship between photography and the modern city, and it focuses on changing images of Seoul, a city that has achieved remarkable development through the process of compressed growth. It is a fact that the passage of time is a phenomenon only experienced and felt by humans — the camera is merely a tool that ceases these moments and makes them permanent. However, ironically the transcendental property of the camera can intensify the sentiments associated with the passage of time. This study examines three photographers: Ki-chan Kim, Se-kwon Ahn, and Hong-goo Kang, who have patiently observed the changing landscape of their city during their lives and who have attempted to transform the human experience of time through the camera's gaze. The three artists abstained from the expression of subjective emotion or manipulation, instead focusing solely on the photography's function as a recording medium. Through the strategic use of the camera's documenting properties, they amplified the message that change is a momentary and irreversible truth. The changing urban image may be the most accurate reproduction of the photographic perspective in that it relegates humans, who are typically the active agent in the experience of time, to the position of observer.

도시는 한 사회가 시간에 따라 겪는 변화가 압축적으로 가시화되는 장소이며, 변화하는 도시의 이미지는 여러 예술장르에 다양한 방식으로 나타난다. 특히 사진은 근대 도시의 발달과 함께 태어났고, 객관적으로 순간을 기록하는 사진의 재현 방식은 생성과 소멸이 끊임없이 반복되는 근대 도시의 면모들을 기록하기에 적합했다. 그로 인해 사진은 오늘날에 이르기까지 수많은 도시 이미지를 생산하는 주된 매체가 되어왔다. 사진 매체와 근대 도시의 관계성에서 출발한 이 연구는 압축성장의 과정 속에 고도발전을 이룩한 서울의 변화 이미지에 주목하였다. 사실 시간에 따른 변화를 경험하는 것은 인간이고, 카메라라는 기계는 순간을 멈추게 하여 영구하게 지속시키는 장치이다. 그러나 그런 초시간적인 카메라의 속성이 역설적으로 시간의 흐름에 대한 감성을 더욱 예리하게 부각시킨다. 이 논문에서 다룬 세 명의 사진가, 김기찬, 안세권, 강홍구는 도시의 풍경이 변화하는 과정을 삶 속에서 꾸준히 관찰하였고, 시간의 흐름에 대한 인간의 경험을 카메라의 시선으로 변환시키고자 했다. 세 작가는 도시의 변화를 추적함에 있어 주관적인 감정 표현이나 인위적인 조작을 절제하고 기록매체로서의 사진의 기능에 집중하였다. 다큐멘터리적인 카메라의 시선을 시각적 전략으로 삼아 이들은 변화란 오직 한 순간일 뿐 결코 되돌릴 수 없는 진실이라는 메시지를 극대화했다. 변화하는 도시 이미지는 시간경험의 주체인 인간을 시간경험의 목격자로 만든다는 점에서, 사진적 시선을 가장 잘 드러낸 재현이라고 할 수 있다.
