There are increasing number of studies on terrorism and radicalization during the past a couple of decades. However, the contribution and development of criminology on terrorism research has not been noteworthy. Considering the potential of criminology in advancing the area of terrorism research, more attention and interests from criminologists are required. Furthermore, application of criminology in understanding terrorism and relative research issues have potential to improve methodological rigors for terrorism research. Therefore, this current study aims to examine the applicability of a criminological theory, social learning theory, for understanding radicalization process among muslim toward Islamic Jihadism or Islamic extremism. To fulfill the purpose of this study, the authors used survey data collected from civilians of four different countries, which have most citizens are muslim, Egypt, Morocco, Pakistan, and Indonesia. The findings of this study revealed that many of important criminological factors and correlates from prior studies on radicalization also have significant influence on muslim radicalization in this sample. The findings could be interpreted that criminological theory is applicable in explaining radicalization toward extremism and terrorism. In results and discussion, the authors elaborated the significance of this study findings and discussed contribution and suggestion for the future studies.

최근 테러리즘 연구의 학문적 발전이 눈에 띄게 나타나고 있다. 그러나 범죄학이론을 적용한 테러연구의 이론적 모델의 제시나 경험적 분석연구는 아직까지도 취약하다. 테러리즘에 영향을 미치는 여러 요인들과 테러리즘 현상간의 인과성 이해를 위해서는 행동과학에 기반을 둔 범죄학 이론의 적용이 필요하다. 이 연구는 이러한 필요에 부응한다. 이 연구는 무슬림이 인구의 대다수인 중동과 동남아시아 국가들의 일반시민들을 대상으로 범죄학 이론을 적용하여 이슬람 급진주의와 그러한 급진주의 증가에 영향을 미치는 여러 요인들 간의 인과성을 설명하려고 시도하였다. 이러한 시도를 통해서 궁극적으로 범죄학 이론의 테러연구에 대한 설명의 효용성을 보여주려고 하였다. 특히 여러 범죄학 이론들 중 개인의 심리적 변화과정에 대한 설명력이 높은 Akers의 사회학습이론을 적용하였다. 분석결과 범죄학 이론인 사회학습이론의 급진화에 대한 설명의 효용성이 확인 되었다. 특히 사회학습이론의 주요 개념들인 가족 및 친구 등의 주요준거집단과의 차별적 교제나, 테러에 대한 지지 혹은 반대 등의 차별적 정의 등이 테러리즘의 급진화에 영향을 미치는 주요 요인들인 것으로 나타났다. 이 연구결과와 관련된 이론적 논의와 함의, 공헌점 그리고 앞으로의 연구제안 등이 논의에서 제시되었다.
