Many researchers have found that most undergraduates are not well aware of the importance of general education, which may result in disappointing general education experience. Since academic advising is for promoting positive education experience by having students adequately understand the meaning of college education, it was researched to see if academic advising can play a role in improving students’ perception on general education and contribute to increasing the effects of general education ultimately. Firstly, YONSEI RC101, a first year seminar taught by professional academic advisors at Yonsei University, was closely examined. It was found that YONSEI RC101 clearly explained the meaning of college education, the structure of general education, and specific competencies one can attain by taking a general education course. Also a survey given before and after the course indicated that YONSEI RC101 improved students’ level of understanding on the goals of general education and understanding of the general education structure. It was also confirmed that it promotes students’ perception on core competencies a student can develop through general education and increased student exposure to the purposes of general education.

학사지도의 주요 목표중 하나는 대학에서의 학업의 의미와 효과를 이해시키고 이를 통해 교육효과를 증진하는 것이다. 현재 교양교육에 대한 대학생들의 인식은 교양교육의 중요성과 의미를 고려할 때 상당히 부족하며, 이러한 낮은 인식은 교육의 효과에 부정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 본 논문은 전문학사지도시스템이 대학 교양교육에 대한 학생들의 인식 제고에 효과가 있으며. 이를 통해 교양교육의 효과 증진에 기여할 수 있음을 밝히기 위한 것이다. 본 논문에서는 전문학사지도시스템에서 기획 운영하는 전체학생 대상의 1학년세미나 YONSEI RC101에서 대학교육의 현재적 의미와 대학별 교육목표, 교양교육 과정에 대한 이해, 교양교육의 의미와 목표, 교과목을 통해 함양 가능한 핵심역량 등에 대해 명시적으로 다루고 있음을 살펴보았다. 그리고, 1학년세미나 YONSEI RC101 수강생을 대상으로 한 2차례의 설문 사전 사후 검사를 통해 (1) 대학 교양교육 목표에 대한 이해 수준 (2) 대학의 교양교육 교육과정에 대한 구체적 이해 (3) 대학 교양교육을 통해 성장될 핵심 역량에 대한 이해 (4) 대학의 교양교육 목표에 대한 충분한 교육 정도에 대한 답변을 분석하였다. 그 결과 모든 설문 문항에서 사전검사와 사후검사간의 통계적으로 유의미한 차이로 향상이 존재하였으며, 교양교육에 대한 인식제고를 위해서 실시한 학사지도 1학년세미나 YONSEI RC101의 교육효과가 나타났음을 볼 수 있었다.
