A Study on Korean English Learners’ Diminisher Usage

This research investigated the difference of ability to use diminishers, which have been regarded as synonyms due to similar meanings, between Korean English learners and native English speakers. Additionally, it was explored whether or not Koreans and native English speakers have different preferences. It was confirmed that three groups(advanced, intermediate and novice) of Korean English learners, divided according to English proficiency, had significant differences in ability of using diminishers compared to that of native English speakers. As for Korean English learners, the higher the English proficiency, the higher the ability of using diminishers. Teaching diminishers along with collocation would help non-native English speakers communicate with English native speakers more naturally with abundant expressions. Thus, using teaching and learning tools with a diminisher collocation corpus can help communication with English native speakers in more natural and colorful expressions
