The purpose of the present study is to show the similarities and differences in expressivity of positive happy feelings between Korea and Japan from a cross-cultural point of view. Based on a statistical analysis of the data collected through the method of Display Rule Assessment Inventory, this study testifies several assumptions regarding how people in different cultures express their emotions of happiness. The findings show that a traditional rigid individualism/collectivism dichotomic approach to expressivity of emotions may not hold in our case. Instead it is proposed that more fine-grained factors should be considered. Finally, the socio-cultural implications of our findings are discussed within Hofstede’s cultural theory.
