This research examined the impact of on-campus residence on institutional commitment among college freshmen. In addition, interactions with faculty and peers were considered as mediators to explain the impact of on-campus residence. Using the 7th wave of Korean Education Longitudinal Study (KELS) 2005 administered by Korean Educational Development Institute (KEDI), the analysis employed a step-wise ordinary least squared regression model. College students who lived in dorm rooms on campus showed a higher level of institutional commitment than students who lived off campus or commuted from parents’ home to school. Student-peer interactions related to community building significantly mediated the association between on-campus residence and institutional commitment, whereas student-faculty interactions modestly mediated between the two. However, student-peer interactions related to academic activities did not play a significant role as a mediator. The research findings suggest that the dormitory acceptance rate should be increased; at the same time, educationally purposeful programs should be connected with dormitory operations. In addition, housing welfare issues among college students who lived off campus may be associated with their relatively low level of institutional commitment despite their high proximity to campus.

본 연구에서는 한국교육개발원의 한국교육종단연구 7차년도 데이터를 사용하여 대학교 1학년 신입생의 기숙사 거주가 대학몰입에 미치는 영향을 분석하였다. 현재 다니고 있는 대학교에 대한 소속감과 만족도를 포함한 소속 대학에 대한 긍정적 인식을 종합적으로 보여주는 개념인 대학몰입은 대학생의 거주형태에 따라 유의미한 차이를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 기숙사에 거주하는 학생들은 자취 및 하숙을 하는 학생들과 부모의 집에서 거주하며 통학하는 학생들보다 높은 수준의 대학몰입도를 보여주었다. 이러한 관계를 설명하기 위해 학교 구성원 간의 상호작용의 매개효과를 살펴본 결과, 공동체 형성 관련 학생 간 상호작용은 기숙사 거주 효과를 유의미하게 매개하고 있는 반면, 교수-학생 간 상호작용은 제한적인 매개를 보여주었고 학업 관련 학생 간 상호작용은 거주형태와 대학몰입 간의 관계를 거의 설명하지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과를 토대로 한국 대학에서 기숙사 수용률 증대의 타당성에 대한 근거를 제시하는 동시에, 기숙사 거주를 통한 효과성을 제고하기 위해 다양한 교육 목적 프로그램을 연계할 필요성이 있음을 논의하였다. 또한 자취 및 하숙을 하는 학생들의 주거복지 문제와 대학몰입 간의 연관성에 대한 논의를 추가하였다.
