The Relationship between High School Students’ Perceived Parenting Attitude and Career Maturity: The Moderating Effect of Self-Directed Learning Ability

The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of high school students’ perceived parenting attitude on career maturity and the moderating effects of self-directed learning ability on the relationship between parenting attitude perceived by high school students and career maturity. The subjects were 369(167 male, 202 female) students in 1st grade and 2nd grade of four high schools at M city in Jeonnam province. They completed Perceived Parenting Behavior Inventory, Career Maturuty Inventory, Self-directed Learning Ability Questionnaire. Statistical analyses of data were frequency, mean, standard deviation, Pearson's correlation coefficient, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. Cronbach's alpha was computed for the reliability of the scales. SPSSWIN 23.0 and AMOS 20.0 were used for data analysis. The results were as follows: First, high school students’ perceived parenting attitude had positive effects on career maturity. High school students who perceived their parents’ parenting attitude as affirmative (affectionate, autonomous, achievement oriented, reasonable) showed high career maturity. Second, high school students’ self-directed learning ability had positive effects on career maturity. High school students who had better self-directed learning ability showed high career maturity. Third, as a result of analyzing the moderating effects of self-directed learning ability on the relationship between parenting attitude perceived by high school students and career maturity, it was found that the interaction between parenting attitude perceived by high school students and self-directed learning ability had impact on career maturity.
