The Mediating Effects of Emotional Dysregulation on the Relationship between Perceived Parenting Attitude and Interpersonal Problems among Adolescents

The purpose of the study was to examine the mediating effects of emotional dysregulation on the relationship between perceived parenting style and interpersonal problems among adolescents. The subjects were 497(262 male, 235 female) students in 2nd grade of three middle schools at M city in Jeonnam province. They completed Perceived Parenting Behavior Inventory, Korean Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale(K-DERS), The Korean Inventory of Interpersonal Problems Circumplex Scales(KIIP-SC). Statistical analyses of data were frequency, mean, standard deviation, Pearson's correlation coefficient, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. Cronbach's alpha was computed for the reliability of the scales. SPSSWIN 23.0 and AMOS 20.0 were used for data analysis. The results were as follows: First, adolescents’ perceived parenting attitude was negatively correlated to interpersonal problems and emotional dysregulation. However, emotional dysregulation was positively correlated to interpersonal problems. Second, emotional dysregulation had partial mediating effects on the relationship between perceived parenting style and interpersonal problems. Third, adolescents’ perceived parenting attitude had negative direct effects on interpersonal problems. Fourth, as a result of analyzing the mediating effects of emotional dysregulation on the relationship between perceived parenting style and interpersonal problems among adolescents, it was found that adolescents’ perceived parenting attitude had significant indirect effects on interpersonal problems.
