Korean church growth is now stagnant over individual church-orientation, denominationalism, materialism, and quantitative growth. In the diverse cultures in the modern society, Korean Church should carry out the mission of evangelizing the socially weak people in our communities, but fails to properly respond to social requests for welfare mission. Korean Church has tried to use welfare mission as a means of church's quantitative growth, thereby losing the communitiesʾ confidence in it. In fact, based on Christian missions with the spirit that humans are equal due to humans being created in the image of God, welfare mission should use the Christian communityʾs and social communityʾs human and material resources and infrastructures in not only serving our alienated neighbors but also systematically and specifically practicing love to restore physical, mental and spiritual well-being. In performing its welfare mission, Korean Church needs to research on the field missionary church growth through case studies not for quantitative growth but for qualitative growth. Korean Church has embraced the respectable historical tradition that as it has carried out its evangelization mission, it has never been thwarted by despair and disappointment but has cried and laughed together with the nation, people, and local communities over the pains, and shared the pains. Therefore, Korean Church should not be silent about and shun the local communityʾs welfare problems, but should endeavor to restore churches to missionary church growth so as to help churches with the passion of gospel and the love of God survive. Thus, this study examined missionary church growth through welfare mission not for Korean Churchʾs quantitative growth but for its qualitative growth.

한국의 교회성장은 개교회주의(個敎會主義)와 교파주의(敎派主義), 그리고 물질주의(物質主義), 양적성장(量的]成長)에 초점을 맞춘 나머지 정체되었다. 현대사회의 다양한 문화 속에서 한국교회는 지역사회(local community)에서 사회적 약자를 위한 선교의 사명을 감당해야 하는데 복지선교의 요청에 제대로 반응하지 못하고 있었다. 단순히 한국교회는 복지선교를 교회의 양적성장을 위한 수단으로 활용하려고 하여 지역사회로부터 공신력을 상실하였다. 사실 복지선교는 하나님의 형상대로 지음 받은 인간이 모두가 다 평등하다는 기독교 선교(christian missions)에 기초해서 교회공동체(christian community)와 사회공동체(social community)가 가지고 있는 인적 자원과 물적 자원의 인프라를 가지고 소외된 이웃을 섬길 뿐만 아니라 육체적이고 정신적이고 영적인 안녕의 회복을 위한 체계적이고 구체적인 사랑의 실천이다. 한국교회는 복지선교를 함에 있어서 양적성장이 아니라 이제 질적 성장을 위해 현장에서 실천하고 있는 선교적 교회성장에 대한 사례연구를 통해 학문적인 접근이 매우 필요하다. 한국교회는 지금까지 선교적 사명을 감당함에 있어서 절망과 좌절 가운데에도 포기하지 않고, 나라와 민족, 그리고 지역사회의 아픔을 위해 함께 울고 함께 웃었고, 함께 고통을 나누는 삶의 아름다운 역사적인 전통을 가지고 있다. 그러므로 한국교회는 지역사회의 복지문제를 침묵하고 외면하는 것이 아니라 복음의 열정과 하나님의 사랑을 가진 교회가 살아남을 수 있도록 복지선교를 통한 선교적 교회성장으로 교회가 회복되어 하나님의 뜻을 이 땅에 이루어 나가야 할 것이다. 그래서 본 연구자는 한국교회가 양적성장이 아니라 질적 성장을 위해 복지선교를 통한 선교적 교회성장에 대한 연구에 대하여 살펴보았다.
