According to recent polls, the social credibility and preference of Korean churches has been very low for several years. One of the biggest reasons for this is the lack of public faith in the members. While separating faith from everyday life, many Christians think that the life of faith is private and only in the church. Therefore, many Christians do not display their true identity as Christians in the world and take on the role of light and salt in the world. The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of congregational songs on the formation of theology and faith of the congregation. Second, it is to examine how much interest in public faith is reflected in the “21C Hymnal” currently used by most Korean churches and in the most popular contemporary worship songs in Korea. If there is a lack of interest, we will examine why. Third, it is to find ways to improve congregational songs to inspire the public faith of Korean Church members. In Chapter 2, I explained that congregational songs are very influential on the formation of theology and faith of the congregation, based on the arguments of many scholars. And I emphasized that to live a life of public faith, we must have a public theology and should create and sing a lot of songs containing the contents of public theology. In chapter 3, I have confirmed through various methods that there is little interest in public faith in the “21C Hymnal.” As Korean churches generally have a strong belief pattern that emphasizes individual redemption, including the cross and the penitence and evangelism, the "21C Hymnal" reveals little interest in public faith. In chapter 4, I analyzed the words of contemporary worship songs commonly used in Korean churches, focusing on words related to public faith, confirming that words related to public faith are rarely used. And I looked at the reason why there are rare songs about public faith in contemporary Christian songs and why such songs are not sung in church. In chapter 5, I suggested what songwriters, theologians and the persons who choose songs can do to improve congregational songs to promote public faith in Korean church members.

최근의 여러 여론조사에 의하면, 한국교회의 사회적 신뢰도와 호감도가 몇 년째 매우 낮다. 그것의 가장 큰 이유 중 하나는 교인들의 공적 신앙 결여이다. 많은 교인들이 신앙과 일상생활을 연결하지 못하고 분리한 채, 신앙생활을 사적인 것이고 교회에서만 이루어지는 것으로 여긴다. 그래서 세상에서 그리스도인으로서의 정체성을 제대로 드러내지 못하고 세상의 빛과 소금으로서의 역할을 잘 감당하지 못하는 교인들이 많다. 이 연구의 목적은 첫째, 회중 찬송곡이 회중의 신학과 신앙 형성에 미치는 영향을 고찰하는 것이다. 둘째, 현재 대부분의 한국교회가 사용하는 『21세기 찬송가』와 한국교회에서 많이 불리는 현대 예배곡에 공적 신앙에 대한 관심이 얼마나 반영되어 있는지 살펴보고, 관심이 결여되어 있다면 그 이유가 무엇인지 고찰하는 것이다. 셋째, 한국교회 교인들의 공적 신앙 고취를 위해 회중 찬송곡이 개선될 수 있는 방안을 모색하는 것이다. 2장에서는 회중 찬송곡이 회중의 신학과 신앙 형성에 매우 큰 영향을 미친다는 점을 여러 학자들의 주장을 근거로 설명하였다. 그리고 공적 신앙의 삶을 살려면 공적 신학을 가져야 하고, 그러려면 공적 신학의 내용을 담은 노래를 많이 만들고 불러야 한다는 점을 강조하였다. 3장에서는 『21세기 찬송가』에 공적 신앙에 대한 관심이 적다는 것을 여러 방법을 통해 확인하였다. 한국교회는 초창기부터 지금까지 일반적으로 십자가와 회개와 전도 등 개인구원을 강조하는 신앙유형이 강하기 때문에, 『21세기 찬송가』에도 공적 신앙에 대한 관심이 적게 나타난다. 4장에서는, 한국교회에서 많이 불리는 현대 예배곡의 가사를 공적 신앙과 관련된 단어를 중심으로 분석해 보았는데, 공적 신앙과 관련된 단어가 거의 사용되지 않았다. 그리고 현대 예배곡 중에 공적 신앙에 관한 노래가 드문 이유와, 그런 노래가 교회에서 잘 불리지 않는 이유를 살펴보았다. 5장에서는, 한국교회 교인들의 공적 신앙 고취를 위해 회중 찬송곡이 개선될 수 있도록, 작사자와 신학자와 선곡자가 할 수 있는 일들을 제시하였다.
