Though the funeral rite in Korean Protestant Church has been shaped and established in line with the Christian identity of mainline Protestant churches since its early mission, it is still in need of reconsideration for some senses and practices. Christian funeral can be not merely a rite of console or healing for the remains but also a moment for people attending at the ritual to reconsider or reinforce their faithful lives. In addition, it is a very important opportunity for a parish church to develop her communal spirit through the voluntary participation of the people throughout the whole occasion. It is also a locus for the Church to manifest her religious values and meaning more powerfully to people including the relatives and acquaintances who are very open-hearted in the presence of critical situation of life. When a church community devotes herself more to this rite by revealing Christian core teachings through preaching, rites, or other pastoral care, it would be not only a good opportunity to help the growth of the people but also to expand the kingdom of God. From this awareness, this article deals with more desirable ideas and practices for funerals in Korean churches, and then proposes more desirable directions in detail that may be performed through verbal message, symbolic rites, and pastoral care.

한국교회의 장례예식은 고래의 유교적이고 토속 종교적인 장례 관습으로부터 독자적인 의례 전통을 구축하여 왔지만 기독교적 정체성의 관점에서는 여전히 성찰과 재고의 여지를 남기고 있다. 교회의 장례예식은 타당한 의미 정립과 실행을 통해 유가족에게 진정한 위로와 회복의 기회로 작용할 뿐 아니라 목회와 선교의 관점에서도 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 함께 애도와 봉사를 통해 참여하는 사람들 안에서 신앙의 새로운 각성이 일어날 뿐 아니라 공동체성 강화가 일어난다. 아울러 함께 한 가족, 친지 및 지인들에게 의도하든 안하든 복음의 진면목이 가장 웅변적으로 드러나게 된다. 이러한 중요성에 비추어 한국교회는 장례를 단지 죽음을 처리하는 최소한의 의무로 그치지 말고 장례식을 통해 그 의미가 효과적으로 구현되도록 분명한 기독교적 정체성을 담아내고 실행하도록 유의해야 한다. 부활의 은총을 입은 기독교 공동체가 그리스도의 승리를 메시지, 예식, 목회 등의 차원에서 장례식 과정에서 진정성 있게 드러내고자 하나면 장례식은 남은 이들의 위로와 신앙 성장은 물론 세상 속 하나님 나라 확장의 큰 기회가 될 것이다. 이런 인식 위에서 이 글은 오늘의 한국개신교회 장례예식의 모습을 우선 개괄적으로 살펴보고 그에 대한 모종의 방향을 제시한 뒤 발전적 기독교 장례예식을 위한 구체적이고 실제적인 방안들을 메시지, 예식, 목회 등의 관점에서 모색하고 제시하고 있다.
