Emotional labor, Burnout and Job Satisfaction of Hospital Nurses

Purpose: This study was done to analyze the relationship among emotional labor, burnout and job satisfaction of nurses. Methods: The data were collected from March 10th to April 10th, 2014 using self report questionnaires given to 194 clinical nurses working in the university hospital. The data were analyzed by mean, standard deviation, and Pearson correlation coefficient using the IBM SPSS program. Results: The average score of emotional labor was 3.49±0.83, burnout 3.19±0.84, and job satisfaction 2.94±0.72. The emotional labor had a significant positive correlation with the burnout(r=.47, p<.001) and a negative correlation with the job satisfaction(r=-.31, p<.001), and there was a significant negative correlation between burnout and job satisfaction(r=-.64, p<.001). Conclusion: the emotional labor had a significant positive correlation with the burnout and negative correlation with the job satisfaction. Therefore clinical nurses require a perception and positive coping strategy about emotional labor, and hospital should provide them an efficient strategy in order to control the emotional labor of them.
