The purpose of this study is to reveal the effects of the study of the Japanese language on the views toward the Japanese and on the motivations of learning Japanese held by Korean students. The data obtained were examined according to the attributions of subjects and path-analysis. Significant differences appeared in the views toward Japan and the Japanese by the sex of the respondent. Male students expressed more positive evaluations toward Japan and the Japanese than females did. Furthermore, the path-analysis showed that affability was positively related to the differences of relationships among in-group members and the differences of social norms, and negatively to the differences of personal value systems. Trust for Japanese was negatively related to the differences of the social norms and the differences of the daily costumes. The positive motivation for learning Japanese was related to trust of the Japanese. Consequently, when Korean students admitted to a high similarity between Korea and Japan in social situations where they participated as in-group members, their affability to Japan and the Japanese is evaluated. However, affability is not an important factor in the motivation for learning Japanese. Korean students perceived that the Japanese have a heterogeneous culture. The cognition of differences between both countries and the views of trust of the Japanese, were correlated with Korean students held the motivation of learning Japanese.
