초록

영어

This paper tried to examine the early Meiji nationalism which functioned as an ideology changing the 19th century that was a turning point of Japanese history. The early Meiji nationalism appeared as the movements making rich nation and strong military, constructing Tenno system, setting up imperialism, building an independent nation, adopting national Shinto, and invading other countries. But in addition to the movements, the Meiji leaden emphasized nationalism in order to strengthen national power, receive western civilization, and imitate the advanced technology of America or Europe. It was necessary to protect Japan h m the aggression by western countries. But internally, the early Meiji nationalism functioned as a good nationalism 1 in the meaning of protection, externally it was just a aggressive nationalism and a bad nationalism because of making an invasion and exploitation upon other countries. Japan have continued to use a nationalism to obtain national interests and development since the 19th century.
