Kim-uk's activities are very important in the development of Korean modern poetry. He played a leading role in writing poetry, translating foreign poetry, and introducing western literary thought. He worked in the period of Japanese occupation of Korea, when it was difficult to have its own literary background and tradition. Under these circumstances, he was actively engaged in the introduction of western literary thought. This essay aims to survey his role in the introduction of western literary thought and his own views on the methods of creation, and to trace the similarities and the aspects of confusion between his creative poetry and translation poetry. In conclusion, he shows some confusions in creation and translation, but his leading role left a great accomplishment in the history of modern Korean literature.
