American Society for Materials Testing Standards No.E399 needs precracking by fatigue loadings. From the theoretical stress distributions, the stress intensity factor is related to equivalent stress, which relies on plastic deformation. The process of fatigue seems to be a general problem common to all materials which can deform plastically. If S.N.Zhurkov’s static fatigue equation is applied to uniaxial tensile test, we get that fracture toughness is related to plastic deformation. The stress-strain curves of the tensile tests after some fatigue loadings reduce plastic deformation. We may prefer to uniaxial tensile test rather than conventional test of fracture toughness.
