The collapse of the USSR and the end of the Cold War, resulting in the collapse of bipolarity and the emergence of multipolar centres of influence, sparked off a myriad of changes which exerted profound impacts on Asia. In fact, the new world order, “multipolar” or “one superpower plus many major powers” bringing about political and security uncertainties with a lot of conflicts leading to struggles and alliances intertwined with and into each other, creates opportunities as well as posing challenges in all aspects including higher education, especially on the way educational classrooms are managed and lectures are delivered, and on the role teachers and students play. Therefore, higher education systems face the challenge of equipping students with multicultural knowledge, skills and values needed to successfully compete themselves in a globalized market. HEIs train generations into excellent manpower, young intellectuals; train talents into global citizen well-prepared for a multi-polar world and for a multicultural community without clashes of any kind nor endangerment which whole person, liberal and multicultural education aims to reach. To actively accelerate international integration of higher education and improve institutional quality, the state should create supporting mechanism platform and publish appropriate policies to form a network of Asia’s higher education institutions (HEIs) with cooperative leadership, where every university can seize the opportunity and proactively develop the totality (wholeness) of human beings who are virtuous and become not only academically sound, but also balanced and healthy psychologically, emotionally and physically.

Sự sụp đổ của Liên Xô cũ và việc kết thúc Chiến tranh lạnh đã dẫn đến sự sụp đổ của thế giới lưỡng cực và sự trỗi dậy của các trung tâm đa cực mang tầm ảnh hưởng lớn, làm nảy sinh vô số những thay đổi có tác động sâu sắc đến châu Á. Trên thực tế, trật tự thế giới mới dù là "đa cực" hay là "một siêu cường cộng với nhiều cường quốc" đều mang lại sự bất ổn về mặt chính trị và an ninh, với nhiều xung đột dẫn đến những cuộc đấu tranh và sự bắt tay của các liên minh, từ đó tạo ra cơ hội cũng như đặt ra những thách thức về tất cả các mặt bao gồm giáo dục đại học, đặc biệt là về cách quản lý lớp học và phương pháp giảng dạy, và về vai trò của giảng viên và sinh viên. Do đó, hệ thống giáo dục đại học phải đối mặt với thách thức trong việc trang bị cho sinh viên kiến thức, kỹ năng và giá trị đa văn hóa cần thiết để cạnh tranh thành công trong một thị trường toàn cầu hóa. Trường đại học đào tạo các thế hệ thành nguồn nhân lực xuất sắc, thành các trí thức trẻ; đào tạo nhân tài thành những công dân toàn cầu chuẩn bị tốt cho một thế giới đa cực và cho một cộng đồng đa văn hóa không có bất kỳ xung đột va chạm nào. Đây là mục tiêu mà giáo dục toàn diện, khai phóng và đa văn hóa hướng đến. Để tích cực đẩy mạnh hội nhập quốc tế về giáo dục đại học và nâng cao chất lượng của các trường đại học, nhà nước nên tạo ra cơ chế hỗ trợ và đưa ra các chính sách thích hợp để hình thành một mạng lưới các tổ chức giáo dục đại học ở châu Á (HEIs) có kỹ năng lãnh đạo hợp tác, nơi mà mọi trường đại học có thể nắm bắt cơ hội và chủ động phát triển con người toàn diện – những người có đạo đức, không chỉ giỏi về mặt học thuật mà còn phát triển cân bằng, khỏe mạnh về mặt tâm lý, tình cảm và thể chất.
