In the Korean Peninsula, the nationalism of North Korea (NK) is revealed in the most peculiar form in the world. According to the specific circumstance or time, it has been evolved to many kinds of logics as follows: as right reason to bring about a war, as the national ideology, as a way of negotiation with South Korea, as a way of resist against foreign countries, and furthermore as a way of the unification of North and South under circumstances and times. This Study hereby did analyze and diagnose the changes of nationalism in NK. First of all, the reason why NK has pursued the nationalism is to secure the orthodoxy in the Korean Peninsular. Second, it is to respond the rapid changes of traditional allied communist countries like China and U.S.S.R. Third, it is to emphasize the internal solidarity as the only socialistic country in the vortex of corruption of many Eastern European countries. Finally, for the cooperation with South Korea, it is to respond specifically to the policy of USA. In future, the nationalism of NK is prospected to be changed in the following three topics. First of all, in the North-South dialogue, it is forecasted that NK will emphasize and utilize the logic of the so-called "Minjokgongjo" [North-South Cooperation] as an accumulation of justice to South Korea and the leverage in the relationship with USA rather than generating substantial achievements. Second, it will incite more the so called “Namnamgaldeung” [South vs South Conflict] in South Korea. The internal problems in South Korea will continue until more reflective nationalism has settled down. Third, it will interrupt the “Hanmigongjo” [Korea-U.S.A. cooperation] continuously. It will continue as long as South Korea will keep the strategic alliance with USA. However, it is hard to consider this as the strategic attempt to crush the very Korea-USA alliance. Ultimately, it has acted as an important ideology that enforces internal and external national policies as the ideology of the state from past to present. Accordingly, it may be a very important variable in the Korean Peninsula problems. However, whether it will be inclined negatively in future will depend on the creation of mature nationalism in South Korea, not the problem of NK alone. This will lead the nationalism of North and South to the “Korean Nationalism”, not the “nationalism in the Korean Peninsula”.

한반도에서의 북한의 민족주의는 전 지구상에서 가장 특이한 형태로 발현되고 있다. 상황과 시기에 따라 상대를 굴복시키기 위한 전쟁의 논리로서, 국가 이데올로기로서, 대남협상을 위한 논리로서, 대외항쟁을 위한 논리로서, 더 나아가서는 한민족의 통일을 위한 논리로서 변화해 왔다. 이에 본 연구는 북한의 민족주의의 변화를 분석, 진단하고, 이를 토대로 북한의 민족주의에 대한 전망을 하였다. 북한이 민족주의를 지향하게 된 것은 첫째, 한반도내에서의 정통성 확보를 위해서였다. 둘째, 중국과 소련의 전통적인 공산주의 국가의 급격한 변화에 이에 대응하기 위해서였다. 셋째, 동구의 붕괴 와중에서 마지막 남은 사회주의 국가로서의 자주성을 대내적으로 강조하기 위해서였다. 넷째, 최근에 와서 특히 미국의 강경노선에 대응하기 위한 대남공조의 목적에서였다. 향후 북한의 민족주의는 다음 세 가지 주제에 있어서 변화가 전망된다. 첫째, 남북대화에 있어서는 실질적인 성과를 창출하기보다는 소위 ‘민족공조’의 논리를 강조함으로서 대남 명분 쌓기와 대미관계에 있어서 지렛대로 활용할 것으로 예상된다. 둘째, 북한의 민족주의는 남한 내의 소위 ‘남남갈등’을 더욱 부추길 것이다. 남한 내에서의 이와 같은 내분 양상은 보다 성숙한 성찰적 민족주의(reflective nationalism)가 정착되기 전까지는 계속될 것으로 보인다. 셋째, 북한의 민족주의는 ‘한미공조’를 지속적으로 방해할 것으로 보인다. 남한과 미국이 전략적인 동맹관계를 지속하는 한 북한의 한미공조 방행 책동은 계속될 것으로 전망된다. 그러나 이것이 한미동맹 자체를 분쇄하기 위한 전략적 시도라고 보기는 어렵다. 결국 북한의 민족주의는 과거부터 현재까지 국가 이데올로기로서 대내외적인 국가정책을 집행하는 중요한 이념으로 작동해 왔다. 따라서 한반도 문제에 있어서 아주 중요한 변수라고 할 수 있다. 하지만 북한의 민족주의가 계속해서 부정적으로 편향될 것인지는 북한만의 문제가 아니라 남한 내에서의 성숙한 민족주의 분위기 조성도 중요한 관건이 될 것이다. 이렇게 될 때 남북한의 민족주의는 ‘한반도내에서의 민족주의’가 아닌 ‘한국민족주의’로 거듭나게 될 것이다.
