The Ha-dong Gopori petroglyphs are sword patterns carved petroglyphs which were made in prehistoric era. This remain shows that how the rain calling ceremony with carving sword patterns on petroglyphs during the bronze age was handed down to this area after prehistoric era. Recently, the data of petroglyphs of prehistoric era have been researched consistently. The study of the petroglyphs have been reasearched intended for prehistoric era. How should we gaze in the petroglyphs of prehistoric era that has been discovered so far and the petroglyphs of era of history that will be discovered from now on? This report was written with the idea that we should discuss it in the field of academic research. The research on the petroglyphs will continue inevitably. Therefore, we should hurry to discuss about this issue seriously at this point. If not, it could be disappeared from our interest, being considered it as just simple folk data.

하동 고포리암각화는 역사시대에 와서 조성된 것이다. 유적은 안정적인 물의 수급을 위하여 바위에 검의 형상을 새기고 기우하던 청동기시대 의례의 형태가, 역사시대에 와서는 지역민에 게 어떻게 계승됐는가 하는 장면을 잘 보여준다. 그렇기 때문에 문화사적 구조의 변동 이후 유 적이 후대에는 어떤 방식으로 기능하였는가 하는 점에서 일정한 의미를 찾을 수 있을 것이다. 최근 들어 역사시대의 암각화 및 암각자료가 연속적으로 조사되었다. 하지만 암각화연구영역 에서 부지불식간에 적용되어 온 시간적 폭은 대체로 선사시대를 중심으로 한다. 이러한 현상에 서 우리는 지금까지 발견된, 그리고 앞으로 발견가능성이 있는 역사시대의 암각자료를 어떻게 바라봐야 하는 것인가에 대한 고민이 있을 수밖에 없다. 이 글은 자료적 보고를 겸함과 동시에 역사시대의 암각화 및 암각자료를 학술연구라는 공론의 장에서 살펴보고자 하는 의도의 글이다. 어쩌면 이러한 유적이 본격적 논의도 없이 하나의 민속 자료로서 제한적 접근으로 그칠 가능성이 있기 때문이다. 역사시대의 암각자료는 지속적인 조사가 예견된다. 그런 만큼 가까운 시일 안에 진중한 논의 로서 성격규정이 이루어져야 할 것이다. 그것을 암각화 영역에서 취급할 것인지, 아니면 단지 민족지(ethnography) 자료로서 제한적으로 살펴볼 것 인지를.
