This study as aesthetic approach to morality aims to investigate the significance and limitation of the concept of aesthetic morality in Shaftesbury and Hutcheson. Shaftesbury used in the first place the term of moral sense as an innate faculty which judges right and wrong or good and evil. Hutcheson, Shaftesbury's intellectual inheritor, developed the concept of moral sense as a kind of theory. They both presented taste, disinterestedness, harmony and kalokagathia as core concepts connecting between sense of beauty and moral sense. The significance and limitation of the concept of aesthetic morality runs as follows: First, Disinterestedness as the main concept of aesthetic morality makes it possible to come into being altruistic ethics which denies Hobbesian or utilitarian morality. Second, aesthetic morality signifies morality of aspiration to attain to the beautiful and the good. Third, it represents kalokagathia as the ideal of education for the whole man. Aesthetic morality, however, have to solve the problem of universality of moral sense and propper integration or ontological status of the beautiful and the good.

본 논문의 목적은 도덕성에 대한 미적 접근의 한 예로 샤프츠베리와 허치슨의 미적 도덕성 개념의 의의와 그 한계점을 밝히는 것이다. 샤프츠베리는 옳고 그름, 선과 악을 구분하는 고유한 능력인 도덕감의 개념을 처음으로 사용하였으며, 허치슨은 도덕감의 개념을 이론으로 정립하였다. 그들은 공히 취미, 무관심성, 조화, 미선성을 미감과 도덕감을 연결하는 주요개념으로 제시한다. 미적 도덕성 개념의 의의와 한계점은 다음과 같다. 미적 도덕성의 핵심개념인 무관심성은 자기이익 및 외재적 가치를 도덕성의 기초로 간주하는 홉스적 관점이나 공리주의적 관점을 거부하고 이타주의적 윤리학의 가능성을 제시한다. 또한 미적 도덕성은 아름답고 선한 것에 대한 열망의 도덕성을 함의하며, 이는 미선성이라는 전인교육의 이상을 표현한다. 그러나 미적 도덕성의 개념은 도덕감의 보편타당성 문제나 미와 선의 균형 잡힌 통합 가능성 내지 미와 선의 존재론적 위상의 문제를 해결해야 하는 과제를 지니고 있다.
