초록

영어

This paper discusses “Refusal” expressions of Japanese university students and Korean university students. The results of my Discourse Role Tests show: 1. The Japanese and Korean used “Direct”, “Reason”, “Apology” refusals mostly. 2. Japanese students use many reason expressions to express the nonnecessity of the newspaper or to show no interest in it. In contrast, Korean students use many reason expressions to make their option or to refer to their affordability. 3. Japanese university students use “Minor sentence” involving conjunctions (kara, node, te) that are considered to be “Direct refusals”. This tendency is stronger when women decline the request. 4. Korean university students use “Minor sentence” involving conjunctions (keredomo, ga) and refuse the request more carefully than the Japanese. This tendency is also stronger when women decline the request.
