This study examines the effects of international entrepreneurial orientation of Korean SMEs on foreign direct investment performance. The study regards the relationship between international entrepreneurial orientation and the FDI performance as a consequence of the moderating variables such as absorption capacity and network capability. The result of empirical analysis using multiple regression analysis shows that the effect of international entrepreneurial orientation of Korean SMEs on foreign direct investment performance is influenced only by risk taking and innovativenss among international entrepreneurial orientation. In addition, innovativeness and foreign direct investment performance were found to be higher with strong absorption capacity and network capability. The results of this study shows that it is necessary for Korean SMEs to strengthen the international entrepreneurial orientation in order to find and exploit foreign market opportunities. However, it is also necessary to make the policy and strategies to minimize the cost of international entrepreneurial orientation.

본 연구는 해외 진출 중소기업 경영자의 국제 기업가적 지향성 즉, 위험추구성, 혁신성, 진취성이 해외직접투자 성과에 미치는 영향을 실증분석하였다. 한편, 본 연구에서는 해외직접투자 한 국내 중소기업 경영자의 국제 기업가적 지향성과 해외직접투자 성과와의 관계를 중소기업의 흡수능력과 현지 네트워크역량에 따라 차이가 발생하는 간접적인 관계로 파악하였다. 다중회귀분석방법을 사용한 실증분석결과, 국내 중소기업의 국제 기업가적 지향성이 해외직접투자성과에 미치는 영향은 국제 기업가적 지향성 중 위험추구성, 혁신성만 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 국제 중소기업의 기업차원의 흡수능력과 현지 네트워크 역량에 따라서 국제 기업가적 지향성이 해외직접투자 성과에 미치는 영향이 상이한 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 연구결과는 국제 기업가적 지향성이 해외시장에서 새로운 시장기회를 찾아내고 활용하는데 긍정적인 측면도 있지만 위험추구적이고, 혁신적이며, 진취적인 국제 기업가적 지향성으로 인해 발생되는 실패와 그에 따른 비용도 크기 때문으로 판단된다. 따라서 국내 중소기업이 해외시장에서 새로운 시장기회를 찾아내고 개척해 나가기 위해서는 국제 기업가적 지향성의 강화도 필요하지만 국제 기업가적 지향성이 갖고 있는 비용도 최소화시켜 나갈 수 있는 기업 및 산업차원의 정책 마련이 필요할 것으로 판단된다.
