This article discusses how knowledge transmission was performed in the Japanese pre-modern age. It is focused on the Middle Ages. In the Japanese Middle Ages, books were generally circulated by a manuscript. And the important knowledge was conveyed by a manuscript. For example, important books such as “Kokin-Wakasyu” or “Nihonsyoki” were circulated by a manuscript before the 17th century. However, there was the print technology in the Japanese Middle Ages. They already had the print technology by xylograph in the 8th century. They were able to make a printed books it if they intended to do. We have such questions why there were only few printed books. We can solve these matters like this way. Because they did not adopt an employment system by an examination before the 16th century. In Japan, an employment examination for government officials was not carried out. The employment system was performed by succession in Japan. Each family was in charge of the duties and the local administration of the central government. The duties contents were shared in each family. Therefore the knowledge about duties was accumulated in each family.

본고는 일본의 중세에 있어 지식 전달에서 본 공공성의 문제에 관한 논고이다. 일본 중세에 있어서는 중요한 지식 전달의 수단인 책의 유통은 대부분을 필사본이 지지하고 있었다. ｢古今和歌集｣이나 ｢日本書紀｣ 같은 중요한 서적도 인쇄본으로 유통되기 시작한 것은 17 세기 이후의 일이다. 필사본이 많다고 하는 것은 단순한 기술적인 문제가 아니다. 목판에 의한 인쇄는 이미 8 세기에 존재하고 있기 때문에 하려고 하면 할 수 있었을 것이다. 필사본이 많다는 것은 16 세기 이전의 인재 등용 제도에 원인이 있다. 일본에서는 科擧가 실시되지 않고 직업은 세습되어 있었다. 또한 각각의 집은 특정의 업무를 맡는 집단이 되어 중앙정부의 업무나 지방 행정의 관리를 행하고 있었다. 그 때문에 업무에 관한 지식은 집 마다 축적되는 결과가 되었다. 폐쇄적인 지식 전달 시스템은 이러한 사회구조에 의해서 유지되고 있었다.
