This paper focused on the effect of readers' background knowledge on predictions during reading. Fifty four learners, who studied Japanese as a foreign language, participated in this study. In the experiment, it was investigated that whether they made predictions during reading by measuring reading time of each sentences. The results indicated that the background knowledge influenced on predictions generated during reading, and implied that giving the background knowledge related to the text encouraged Japanese learners to make predictions.
