Dohwageukjang was a theater built in Dohwa-dong, Mapo, during the Japanese colonial period. The area where the theater was located belonged to the suburbs of Seoul, and originally Dohwageukjang had a vague stance between the seoul city theater and the local theater. The theater was operated as a theater even after the liberation of 8.15 with the love of the locals. The theater continued until the 1990s even after the name changed to Gyeongbogeukjang in the 1950s. Dohwageukjang was the last theater visited by a theatricals who had completed seoul performances before they performed local performances. In some cases, it was a theater where performances were performed just before the fullscale performance of seoul city performances. During the Japanese occupation period, the Dohwageukjang was used not only as a theater but also as a meeting place for residents or as a significant gathering space. Since the liberation of Korea, it has mainly been operated as a movie theater, and it has become a subject of topophillia which is enjoyed by locals. Although this theater was not widely recognized as a theater of Korean theater, it has functioned as a theater to soothe the joys and sorrows of the local people in the suburbs and to convey amusement and joy.

도화극장은 일제 강점기 마포 도화동에 건립된 극장이었다. 이 극장이 위치한지역은 경성 교외에 해당하였으므로, 태생적으로 도화극장 역시 경성 시내 극장과 지역 극장 사이에 낀 애매한 위상을 지니고 있었다. 이 극장은 지역민의 사랑을 받으면서 해방 이후에도 극장으로 운영되었으며, 1950년대 경보극장으로 명칭이 변경된 이후에도 1990년대까지 존속했다. 도화극장은 경성 공연을 마친 연극인들이 지역 공연에 나서기 전에 방문하는 마지막 극장 중 하나였으며, 경우에따라서는 경성 시내 공연을 본격적으로 시행하기 직전에 시험 공연하는 극장으로 활용되기도 했다. 도화극장은 일제 강점기에는 비단 극장으로서의 역할 뿐만아니라, 주민 회합의 장소나 중대 집회 공간으로 활용되었다. 해방 이후에는 주로 영화관으로 운영되며, 지역민들이 즐겨 찾고 아끼는 장소애의 대상이 되기도했다. 연극영화사적으로 이 극장은 크게 주목받지 못했으나, 교외의 지역민들의애환과 설움을 달래주고, 유희와 즐거움을 전하는 극장으로 기능한 바 있다.
