Under the assumption that a non-verbal act goes beyond a simple expression to serve as a certain communication mechanism, emotion can be interpreted as an act that exerts physical and psychological influence on others. In this regard, emoticon, which signifies one’s intension in the form of a non-verbal act, may affect relationship with others. In this respect, this paper presumed that emoticon alleviates face-threatening and functions as a strategy to convey politeness. From the perspective of face-threatening act (FTA) and politeness strategy, this study examined the presumption with a Japanese-Korean text of Densha Otoko(translated as Train Man),which incorporated emoticon in its content. In terms of the scope of research subject, this paper confined emoticon to a combination of characters and symbols, i.e. keys on a computer keyboard, and excluded icons constituted with only a fraction of a computer file.
