영어

Clement VI has often been regarded as the most typical of the Avignon popes, and has therefore tended to be the most vilified of them. He has been seen as the symbol of the period of 'Babylonish captivity', a period said to be decadent and devoid of ideas, and sullied with nepotism and vice. However I tried to explain Clement on the revisionist point of view. First, the pope Clement's attitude to the Jews was different from that of most people. It was one of tolerance towards the people of Israel. His main accusation against the Flagellants was that under pretence of piety they had let loose the works of impiety. They had cruelly shed the blood of the Jews, whom Christian piety receives and sustains and does not allow to be harmed. He had condemned the Jewish massacres in the strongest possible terms, threatening excommunication to any who harmed them. He had protected their property and had ordered Christians to submit any quarrels they had with Jews to due process of law. Second, Pope Clement VI tried to build up Avignon as the intellectual and artistic nucleus of Christendom by drawing people to it- many of them Italians, through patronage. His generosity was extended especially to humanist scholars, writers, architects, natural scientists, and musicians, and it is this aspect of the pontificate above all which has led historians to label Clement as a 'Renaissance' pope. In his lavish patronage of builders, painters, and sculptors Clement anticipated the popes of the fifteenth century, and in paying his artists to create realistic representations and to capture the beauties of nature he was indirectly contributing to the development of Renaissance values.
