This paper describes one case of classes to integrate Social study and Korean subjects of 6th grade. At first students chose a book ‘A Long Walk to Water’ for NE. Students identified some problems characters have faced and try to figure out solvable solutions with engineering. Three groups designed different solutions each other. Students brainstormed how to solve their solutions based on previous scientific knowledges. Students gave a presentation of their works to others, and others give feedback to presenter. Finally students recreate stories with their work. The results showed that the writing skill of students got higher and deeper than ever. This is because students write new stories based on their previous experiences.

본 연구에서는 Novel Engineering(NE)을 활용하여 초등 6학년 사회와 국어과목을 융합한 수업사례를 기술한 다. NE의 첫 단계를 위해서 선정한 책으로는 “우물파는 아이들”이다. 학생들은 이야기 속에서 모둠별로 주인공 이 처한 문제을 찾고 그 해결책을 제시하였다. 3개의 모둠이 서로 다른 해결책을 제시하였고, 각 모둠별로 브레 인스토밍을 통해서 기존에 배운 과학수업의 내용을 바탕으로 해결책을 실제로 구현하였다. 학생들은 다른 학생 들에게 피드백을 받고, 이를 토대로 자신의 해결책을 업그레이드하였다. 마지막으로 자신들이 구현한 해결책을 주인공이 사용한다는 가정하에 이야기를 재구성하였다. 그 결과 평소 국어과에서 상상하여 이야기쓰기를 할 때 아이들의 작문보다 실제 자신들의 경험을 담아 글을 쓰니 글의 내용 및 깊이가 더 깊어짐을 볼 수 있었다.
