Since the establishment of the Department of Arabic at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in 1965, Korean scholars have conducted researches on the Middle East, but Islamic Studies is still highly underdeveloped. They have tended to sacrifice opportunities to take more objective approaches by disregarding the Western Islamicists’ works on Islam as mere products of Orientalism. Comparing the Western Islamicists’ quest for the historical Muhammad with Korean scholars’ approaches to the topic, this paper attempts to analyze the lack of development in Korean Islamwissenschaft and propose new ways to boost objective research in the academic field without falling into the trap of the discourse on Orientalism in the hope that this will contribute to a further development of Islamic Studies in Korea.

1965년 한국외국어대학교에 아랍어과가 설치되면서 중동연구가 시작되어 발전해왔지만, 50년이 지난 오늘날까지 국내 이슬람학은 여전히 불모지와 다를 바 없다. 19세기 말이래 다양한 방법론으로 이슬람학을 발전시켜 온 서구와 달리 우리나라의 이슬람 연구는 답보상태다. 특히 국내 학자들은 서구의 이슬람 연구방법이나 결과를 ‘오리엔탈리즘Orientalism’의 산물로 일반화하여 비판하면서 정치화된 입장에서 학자를 친 이슬람과 반 이슬람이라는 진영 논리로 나누어 보는 경향을 짙게 보인다. 이 논문은 서구 이슬람학의 역사적 무함마드 연구를 예로 삼아 국내의 이슬람 연구 동향을 비판적으로 고찰하고, 서구 학자들이 추구해 온 객관적 연구 정신을 오리엔탈리즘 담론의 덫에 빠지지 않고 우리 이슬람학계가 구현해야 한다고 주장한다.
