In an industrial society, the problem with inequality was discussed based on many different forms of class discrimination that took place in the area of production in the workplace, and the class discrimination resulted most from a hierarchical organizational structure. However, recently there is a large range of discussion on the inequality in leisure activities that was the reverse side of the workplace. Class discrimination in leisure is accompanied with many complex social problems like the length of and continuance in leisure time, determination of leisure participation, discrimination in the labor market, ect. that are evident especially in women’s participation in leisure activities. The study explores another comprehensive social phenomena that have affected women’s participation in leisure activities beyond the point of gender approach in previous research that compared the positions and roles of male and female to describe the characteristics of and issues in women’s participation in leisure activities. Women’s participation in leisure activities is increasingly important as it can change public policy for politics, soften the boundary between workplace and home for business, and reduce social exclusion for society.

과거 산업사회에서 논의되었던 불평등 현상에 대한 사실들은 주로 노동영역의 생산 과정에서 나타나는 다양한 계급 간 차별을 통해 논의되었으며, 특히 계급 관계에서 상하 의 위계적 층위에 의해서 설명되어왔다. 하지만 최근에는 사회불평등 현상을 고찰하는 과정에서 노동영역에서의 차별적 현상과 함께 그 반대급부로 진행되었던 여가문화의 불 평등 현상도 함께 논의되고 있다. 여가의 계급화 문제에는 여가시간의 길이, 여가시간의 지속성, 여가참여의 주체성, 노동시장에서의 차별 현상 등 복잡한 사회적 쟁점들이 혼재 해 있다. 그 중에서도 최근 특히 여성 여가문화의 불평등 현상은 역사적으로 이 같은 점 들을 모두 포괄하고 있다. 본 연구는 여성 여가문화의 특성과 쟁점을 설명하는 주요 이 론적 근거인 젠더 관점에서의 남녀 지위 및 역할 비교에 기반을 둔 기존 논의를 넘어서 여성의 여가에 영향을 미치는 거시적이면서 복합적인 사회구조 현상을 중점적으로 탐색 했다. 여성 여가문화는 국가 정치적 측면에서의 정책 변화, 시장영역에서의 노동-가사 영역의 경계 유연화, 사회문화적 측면에서의 사회적 배제 질서의 완화라는 점에서 사회 적 중요성이 증대되고 있다.
