We analyzed and applied the Winnicott’s OR theory to the infantile development and the historical events at the various stages of life of Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn in the book of Genesis. We supposed the emotional disorders Reuben might have had at the stages of fetal and infantile development, possibly developed by sufferings from the lack of good maternal care due to Leah’s physical and psychological limitations and Jacob’s indifference, and then interpreted the effect of those disorders on the specific family conflicts in Reuben’s entire life. Jacob’s rejection at the very early stage of her marriage did not give Leah a proper opportunity as a good enough mother for Reuben, and this unfavorable facilitating environment was even more aggravated by her giving birth to four sons in a row every year. As a result, Reuben failed to establish his ego integration and build up his internal capability, and thereby throughout his life events and in his psychological fusion with Leah, he revealed his false self and emotional deprivation in insecurity. This validates the successful application of the Winicott’s OR theory to the interpretation of the developmental stages of a biblical figure.

창세기의 인물인 야곱의 장자 르우벤의 발달 과정과 성장하면서 가족들과의 관계에 서 일어나는 사건들을 중심으로 위니컷의 대상관계 이론을 적용하여 분석하였다. 르우 벤이 아버지의 무관심 속에 엄마의 태중에 있을 때부터, 그리고 유아기에 엄마의 육체 적 및 심리적 제약 속에 충분한 모성적 보살핌을 제대로 받지 못해 겪을 수 있는 유아발 달 단계에서의 정서발달 장애를 상정한 후, 이러한 정서발달 장애가, 르우벤의 각 성장 기에서 겪는 사건, 즉 합환채 사건, 빌하 동침 사건, 요셉 실종사건, 베냐민 애굽 호송사 건을 거쳐, 최종적으로 장자권 박탈 사건까지 전 생애에 미치는 영향을 해석하여 보았 다. 엄마 레아는 결혼 초부터 마음의 깊은 상처와 연년생의 아들 넷을 낳음으로 말미암 아, 르우벤에게는 아동기에 이르기까지 충분히 좋은 엄마로서의 촉진적 환경을 제공해 주지 못하였다(Winnicott, 2000). 그 결과, 르우벤은 자아통합과 내적능력 축적의 실 패를 경험하고, 엄마와의 융합 관계 속에서, 거짓 자기의 모습으로 불안 가운데 박탈 콤 플렉스를 안고 평생을 살아가게 되었고, 그 모습은 그가 겪는 사건들의 심리적 배경과 잘 조화되었다. 이로써 위니컷의 대상관계 이론이 성경 인물의 발달 단계 해석에도 충 분히 도움을 줄 수 있음을 확인하였다.
