The thoughts of ‘Hyo’ comes from our own ideology of ‘humanitarism’, so called, ‘Hong-ik In-gan’, which is based on our ancestors’ practice of worshipping and showing respects for Heaven and the former ascendants, which has dominated the national spirit as the practice of ethics. Therefore carrying out ‘Hyo’ education as its principle on the basis of ‘the benevolence for parents and filial duty for children’ should not be neglected by our nation, schools, and the society in oder to build better moral and ethical education. Hence, our most urgent task is to find out how we can internalize the thought of proper ‘Hyo’ into education, and make young people live their desirable lives, paying respects for their parents and the elderly people. Particularly, some of the most important tasks of all are to reconstruct what is considered to be the old legacy of ‘hyo’ into the contemporary ‘hyo’ education, and to adopt the modern home ethics and establish further national values of education. For that reason, elementary schools shouldn’t identify ‘hyo’ education as only one aspect of ethical virtue, but rather should apply some kind of educational methods that can let them embrace the thought of ‘hyo’, and it will be eventually internalized and actualized when it is taught gradually and consistently in systematic manners in the long term. Therefore in order to implement and actualize ‘hyo’ education at school, it requires not only teachers’ passion and interests, but also their efforts and capabilities related to the operation of the educational programs to reconstruct and retranslate what modern concept of ‘hyo’ is to meet the level at which it may be appropriate to the course of study carried out on the basis of the given level of national standardized educational programs. In other words, school programs should yield inevitable worth virtues of ‘hyo’, and teach them systematically through maximizing the use of social networks, and the cooperations of homes and communities. To settle ‘hyo’ education effectively, our schools, homes, and communities work together to strengthen their links, so that students can become aware of the importance of ‘hyo’. Furthermore the students’ mental and physical development take place during their elementary school period, and it’s the time when children’s self-identity is starting to form, and so it’s crucially important to promote them to build rational value judgement. Overall, ‘hyo’ education should be initiated through the individual’s spontaneity and the social networks of homes, schools, and communities. The fundamental concept of modern ‘hyo’ ideology should be worked as the bridge of connecting tradition, present, and the future to foster better education. The essay hereby presents the needs of ‘hyo’ education in the elementary schools shown through excellence cases of ‘hyo’ education, ‘hyo’ related encyclopedia, and research papers, and is now searching for ways to adopt ‘hyo’ education effectively in the elementary schools.

효사상은 우리 고유의 사상인 홍익인간의 이념에 근거한 敬天崇祖, 愛人思想과 조화를 이루어 온 조상들의 생활 철학이요, 실천 윤리로서 민족의 정신세계를 지배하여 왔다. 그러므로 효 교육은 인간교육으로서 父慈子孝의 원칙에 의하여 자발적으로 국가, 학교, 사회 어디서나 이루어지지 않으면 안 된다. 따라서 오늘을 살아가고 있는 우리 모두에게 가장 시급한 과제는 어떻게 하면 적합한 효 의식을 내면화하고, 효행을 실천하여 학생들 이 부모님과 웃어른을 공경하는 마음을 갖고 바람직한 삶을 살아갈 수 있는가 하는 것이 다. 특히 낡은 유산이라고 생각했던 효를 지금의 시대에 맞는 현대적인 효 교육으로 정 립, 새로운 현대적 가정 윤리를 정립하고 나아가서는 민족 교육관을 확립하는 일이 무엇 보다 중요한 과제인 것이다. 그러므로 초등학교 효 교육은 효 사상을 하나의 윤리적인 덕목으로만 이해시키거나 규칙화하기 보다는 효심을 일깨워 주는 심성을 통한 교육방법 이 우선되어야 하며, 장기적인 측면에서 단계적이고 지속적으로 이루어질 때 학생들에 게 내면화되고 행동화되는 것이다. 따라서 학교 현장에서의 효 교육이 수업 속에서 구체 적으로 실현되기 위해서는 국가적 수준에서 제시된 교육과정이 교실 상황에 적합하도록 교사에 의해 재해석 되고, 재구성할 수 있는 교사의 관심과 열정 그리고 교육과정 운영 과 관련된 적절한 능력과 노력이 요구되고 있다. 즉 학교 교육과정 속에서 가치 불변의 효 덕목을 추출하여 체계적으로 지도하고, 지역 사회의 여건을 최대한 활용하며, 가정과 지역사회가 동참하는 분위기를 조성하여 사제가 동행하는 가운데 체험 중심의 효 교육 이 이루어져야 한다는 것이다. 특히 효 교육이 자리 잡기 위해서 학생 스스로가 효의 필 요성을 자각하여 구체적으로 체험하고 실천할 수 있도록 학교교육, 가정교육, 지역사회 교육 간의 연계성을 강화하고, 사회와 매스컴의 교육적 순기능을 강화해야 한다. 특히 초등학교 시기는 육체적·정신적 발달이 이루어지고 개인의 정체성을 확립해 가는 시 기이므로 그들에게 합리적인 가치 판단을 내릴 수 있는 능력을 신장시켜 주는 것이 매우 중요하다. 그러므로 초등학교 효 교육은 개개인의 자발성과 횡적인 유대감을 조성하는 분위기 속에서 가정, 학교, 사회교육을 통하여 발로되어야 하며, 아울러 孝에 대한 본질 을 현대적 이념으로 계승하여 전통, 현실, 미래를 연결하는 긍정적 차원에서의 가치교육 이 되도록 노력해야 할 것이다. 이에 본 논문에서는 초등학교 효 교육 실천 우수 사례, 효와 관련된 서적, 선행연구물 등을 바탕으로 초등학교 효 교육의 현실적 필요와 과제 제시를 통해 초등학교 효 교육의 바람직한 방안을 모색한다.
