Basic Study on the Making of Cultural Network for Incheon Port-Opening Area

This paper is to find a solution for making a unique place through the utilization of modern cultural heritage focused on the Incheon Port-Opening area. The research area is located in Jung-Gu, Incheon and this research is focused on how to preserve and incubate the placeness and cultural resources which exist in old architectures especially from 19C and the early of 20C. For this study, Chun & Bin (2008) analysis of the cultural regeneration model was used as the basis. Focusing on the target of cultural generation, this framework comprises of three sectors - cultural carriers, physical environment and cultural network. The explanations of three sector is as follows: 1) Cultural Carriers of Incheon Port-Opening area. In the case study of Incheon Port-Opening area, there are many Chinese people living there. They have been settled in Incheon for over 110 years and therefore has an environmental impact of Incheon Port-Opening area. And cultural groups delegate “sub-culture” of place, which is beneficial to the diversity of local culture. 2) Physical Environment of Incheon Port-Opening area. Physical environment strategies emphasize protecting the authority of local historical milieu and the utilization of Modern Cultural Heritage. Firstly, the urban pattern should be strictly protected. Incheon Port-Opening area, for the first time in the country, took place in the modern urban planning. Secondly, Modern Cultural Heritage of Incheon Port-Opening area should be protected, repaired, re-decorated and encouraged to enlarge historical values and meaningfulness of cultural resources in a place. Thirdly, the facade, contour and other details should be controlled by guidelines. 3) Cultural Network of Incheon Port-Opening area. The local association consists of a variety of cultural circles and cultural nodes as a network. The cultural node of Incheon Port-Opening area emerges near Modern Cultural Heritage providing cultural interaction: because residents are recognized Cultural heritage as a resource to strengthen the competitiveness of the region. The cultural circle of Incheon Port-Opening area presents cultural interaction and service exchange and promotes the communication between multi-cultural groups. This appears in the form of a local festival. The local association of Incheon Port-Opening area is to build a relationship mutual cooperation between various stakeholder on cultural heritage.

도시재생은 도시 확장으로 인해 상대적으로 낙후된 기존 도시에 새로운 기능을 도입 하고 창출함으로써 쇠퇴한 도시를 새롭게 부흥시키는 사업을 의미한다. 이 같은 맥락에 서 본 연구는 인천 개항장의 근대문화유산을 활용하여 실제 경험할 수 있는 특화된 ‘명소 (名所)’ 조성 방안을 커뮤니티의 전략적 차원에서 모색하고자 한다. 이를 위해 Chun & Bin(2008)의 문화적 도시재생의 모델을 공간 분석을 위한 기준으 로 활용할 것이다. 이 모델은 문화적인 매트릭스로서 지역 주민들을 포함한 도시재생의 방향을 강조하고 있다. 또한 도시의 물리적인 환경을 디자인하는 것에서부터 지역문화 의 네트워크를 재구조화하는 것까지 도시재생의 경계를 확장함으로써 문화적 도시재생 의 방안으로서 차별성을 가진다.
