It can be argued that the recent focus of multicultural education in Korea is changing towards understandings of culture and arts from the understanding of the language and society. This shift has brought significant development of education for culture and arts that help children from multicultural family develop self-identity, as well as adjust to the Korean society. The purpose of the current study is to find how efficiently the music can be utilized for the multicultural education. This study analyzes the dynamic changes in a multicultural society and suggests a new role of music in a multicultural education in Korea. Additionally, the current study focuses on understanding cultural diversity and raising awareness of cultural diversity through music, and defines the concept of music education within the multicultural education area, and examines establishment of identity through a multicultural music education. Finally, in the current study, a variety of music from different genres is introduced in order to understand the cultural diversity in multiculturalism, and the direction of multicultural music education research is discussed for gaining a better understanding of cultural diversity.

현재 한국에서의 다문화교육은 한국어 교육과 한국 사회에 대한 이해 교육에서 문화·예술 교육으로 변화되고 있는 실정이다. 이러한 문화·예술교육으로의 전환은 다문 화가정자녀에게 정체성의 올바른 확립과 한국 사회에서의 적응에 긍정적인 것으로 나타나고 있다. 이러한 상황 속에서 본 연구는 음악이 어떻게 다문화 교육에 효과적으로 활용 될 수 있는 지에 고찰해 보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 현재 한국 사회가 다문화 사회로 진입 하면서 나타나는 교육의 변화, 특히 음악교육의 변화를 바라보며, 음악을 통한 다문화 교 육의 새로운 역할을 제시하고자 한다. 또한 문화 다양성을 이해하며, 음악을 통하여 문화 다양성에 대한 인식을 고취시키는 방법을 찾아본다. 다문화 음악 교육의 개념을 정립하고, 다문화 음악 교육을 통한 정체성 확립에 대하여 살펴본다. 또한 다문화주의에서의 문화 다양성을 이해하기 위하여 다양한 세계의 음악을 소개하며, 문화다양성의 이해를 위한 다문화 음악 교육의 방향을 연구한다. 결과적으로 다문화 음악교육을 통하여 지리적 특성, 민족, 언어, 종교, 계층 등의 다양한 문화를 이해할 수 있다.
