The main goal of this paper is to reconsider the meaning of the critical issues associated with the origin and the development of the clear image of Yamanba, by examining the lineage of its image and imagination, as the focus of the scope of female yokai in this paper. This study examined the issues surrounding the name and notation of Yamanba, the development of Yamanba’s image within the literary transition, the background of the fundamental limitation of a female yokai with relation to her femininity, birth, and children. Lastly, the modern transformation of Yamanba and its various uses were investigated. Yamanba was traditionally regarded to be the existence of fear of the traditional image of the yokai, the existence of a deep grudge against dying without giving birth to any children, and the existence of motherhood to take endless care of children. The image of Yamanba has incessantly changed according to the traditions of each region and the special circumstances experienced by those who live there. In future, the Yamanba story, its derived images, its ranges of recognition, its patterns of interpretation, and its transformations are all expected to continue to be diversified in many ways.

일본 여성 요괴 속에 담겨져 있는 야만바의 역사적 산물로서의 오랜 이미지의 변천과정과 그 의미 그리고 인식의 다양성을 고려해 볼 때, 이를 유행 속에서 지나가는 단순한 요괴의 하나로 생각하고 넘어가기에는 그 존재의 무게감과 깊이가 상당하다. 즉 일본 요괴 문화 속의 주요한 여성요괴들의 이미지의 계보와 그 흐름 속에서 야만바는 하나의 커다란 중심축을 이루는 존재라 할 수 있다. 따라서 본고에서는 여성 요괴의 범위를 야만바로 한정하여 야만바의 이미지와 상상의 계보, 그리고 연구흐름을 살펴봄으로써, 그의 명확한 이미지의 연원과 그 전승양상을 통하여 발생하는 주된 논점들 속에 담겨져 있는 의미를 재고해보는 것을 본고의 주된 목적으로 삼고자 하였다. 이를 통하여 야만바 이미지는 일본의 각 지역의 특색과 그곳에서 살아가고 있는 사람들이 처한 특수한 환경 속에서 그 이미지는 가감되며 전승되어 왔던 것임을 알 수 있었다. 앞으로도 야만바 이야기와 그 속에서 파생되는 이미지와 그 인식의 범위와 해석의 양상, 그리고 변용은 더욱더 다변화해갈 것으로 생각된다.
