This thesis analyzes the discourse of East Asia in modern-day Japan by dividing the country into Pacific Rim-focused and Sea of Japan-focused elements. The research concludes that the elements along the Pacific Rim tend to be led by the national government and to be neo-conservative whereas those along the Sea of Japan tend to be led by local governments and tend to orientate themselves towards the post-Cold War world.

본고는 전후 일본의 동아시아 담론을 ‘환태평양’ 중심과 ‘환일본해’ 중심으로 구분하여 분석한 것이다. 그 결과 ‘환태평양’은 정부주도이자 ‘신’ 보수주의적 성격을, ‘환일본해’는 지방자치체 주도이자 탈냉전적 성격임을 밝혔다. 그러나 ‘환태평양’도 ‘환일본해’도 미국이라는 존재를 염두에 두고 있다는 점에서는 전후 일본의 특성을 공통적으로 나타내고 있다. 다만, 전자는 미국을 절대적 존재로 다루는데 비해 후자는 상대적 존재로 다루는 차이가 있다.
