The meeting of the heroine and the hero in the novel “Yorunonejame” is reflected in two key words ‘koto' and ‘monoimi'. These key words were intentionally used by the author. In the Heian period, curule men and women were rarely able to meet each other. Usually, the women stayed at home and remained out of sight. It was therefore almost impossible for a single woman to have opportunities to meet men other than male family members. However, the two key words in the novel, ‘koto' and ‘monoimi', lead the main characters to have a fateful encounter. This is cleverly planned by the author. Nakanokimi's excellent skill of koto attracts the hero's attention, who is led to her by the beautiful sound. Also, Nakanokimi's heavy monoimi provides the heroine with the excuse to leave her own house and stay in an acquaintance's house. This contributes to the dramatic element of the novel. The hero falls in love at first sight and spends a night with the heroine. However, the tragic element of Yorunonejame leads the story into an unhappy ending. The main characters realize they cannot marry, because the hero is engaged to the heroine's sister, although he is unaware of this relation. Then the heroine discovers she is pregnant. Although polygamy was quite common among aristocracy in the Heian period, a man was not permitted to marry sisters. This forms the tragedy of Yorunonejame.

『요루노네자메』의 두 남녀주인공, 나카노키미와 츄나곤은 고귀한 신분이었기에 원래라면 결혼이라도 하지 않는 한 만날 수 없는 사이였다. 그러나 두 사람의 만남은 작자가 마련해 놓은 두 개의 키워드- 고토(琴)와 모노이미(物忌)가 있었기에 만날 수 있었다. 천인(天人)까지도 상찬하던 나카노키미의 고토의 음색에 이끌려 유모의 병문안을 와 있던 남주인공은 여주인공을 만나게 된다. 또한 남주인공이 여주인공을 만나기 위해서는 여주인공이 자택이 아닌, 남주인공의 유모 집근처에 와 있어야 하는데, 그것을 가능하게 한 것은 또 하나의 키워드인 ‘모노이미’였다. 『요루노네자메』에는 모두 14회의 모노이미 기술이 있는데, 권1에는 9번의 모노이미가 나온다. 그것은 전부 여주인공인 나카노키미의 것이다. 모노이미에는 경중(軽重)의 차이가 있어, 무거운 모노이미의 경우는 자택을 나와서 모노이미를 해야만 했다. 나카노키미는 무거운 모노이미가 되어 자택을 나와 모노이미를 함으로써 남주인공과 만나게 되는 것이다. 또, 『요루노네자메』의 비극적인 요소는 남녀주인공이 결코 결혼할 수 없는 관계였기때문이었다. 남주인공은 나카노키미의 친언니인 오키미와 결혼하는데. 당시에는 같은 어머니를 가진 자매와 결혼 할 수 없었다. 이 사실이 『요루노네자메』를 비극적인 모노가타리로 성립시키는 것이다.
