This paper analyzed a short novel (1983) written by Chinese writer Zhang Xianliang(张贤亮, 1936~2014) from the perspective of literary geography and found out the followings. First, ‘Xiao'erbulake’ is a geographic name meaning 'caustic soda' in English and interpreted allegorically, which functions as the basis of the writing, and maturity through pains is the subject consciousness of this novel, which is plotted with geographic elements that are strategically applied. Second, this novel shows two geographical contrasts: Kouli vs. Xinjiang, and Shanghai vs. Xiao'erbulake. That is, capitalism and socialism are expressed as geographic bearings of the right and the left. Shanghai whose social ideology is by far the most capitalistic is set as the fart end of the right on the Chinese map while Xiao'erbulake, which is an isolated area at the center of the most desolate Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang located at the far end of Shanghai, is set as the far end of the left. It gives the effect of dramatic contrast and reversal. Third, the names of places like Hami (main gate), Ulumuqi (a beautiful ranch), and Tieganlike (thorn bush) are used in this novel as a narrative mechanism with inversed symbolic meanings applied to them. Fourth, the location of Xiao'erbulake, which is the primary area of the story, is imaginarily shifted and strategically rearranged so it can effectively realize the subject consciousness of the novel through a unique imaginative geography and give a strong impression on geography.

본고는 중국 작가 장셴량(张贤亮, 1936~2014)의 단편소설 <肖尔布拉克>(1983)를 문학지리학의 시각에서 분석하여 다음과 같은 사실을 밝혔다. 첫째, 이 소설은 잿물(碱水)이라는 뜻을 지닌 ‘샤오얼부라커(肖尔布拉克)’라는 지명에 대한 알레고리적 해석을 창작의 기저로 삼고 고난을 통한 성숙이라는 주제의식을 지리적인 요소들을 전략적으로 운용하여 펼쳐낸 작품이다. 둘째, 이 작품은 지리적으로 내지(口里)와 신쟝(新疆), 상하이(上海)와 샤오얼부라커라는이중적 대조를 보여주는데, 그 가운데서도 자본주의와 사회주의가 우파와 좌파라는 방위로 표시되는 것을 지리에 적용하여 자본주의 색채가 가장 농후한[极右] 상하이를 중국지도상의 우극(右极)으로 삼고 그것과는 반대쪽으로 가장 먼[极左] 신쟝에서도 가장 황량한 타클라마칸사막의 한가운데 고립된 샤오얼부라커를 좌극(极左)으로 설정함으로써 극적 대조와 전도의효과를 배가시키는 데 성공을 거두었다. 셋째, 이 작품은 하미(哈密: 대문), 우루무치(乌鲁木齐: 아름다운 목장), 톄깐리커(铁干里 克: 가시덤불) 등 지명을 가져와 그 역의에 상징적 의미를 부여하고 이를 서사적 장치로 활용하였다. 넷째, 작품의 핵심적 장소라고 할 수 있는 샤오얼부라커의 위치를 실제와는 다르게 상상적으로 변형하여 전략적으로 재배치함으로써 독특한 심상지도를 통해 주제의식을 효과적으로구현하면서 장소에 대한 강한 인상을 심어주었다.
