There have been diverse types of Chinese terms used to reference lovers over different time periods. Recently, as the social conceptualization of lovers is changing, newly coined terms are easily observed, which reflect this social shift. This paper observed the following findings through the analysis of Chinese terms of reference for lovers. First, the ‘Xiao- (小)’ type terms were greatest in quantity among Chinese terms of reference for lovers. In respect to the structure, the prefix type terms are characterized by the stronger term, which forms the quality, instead of the suffix type. Second, the Chinese terms of reference for lovers are characterized by their asymmetric tendency in gender preferences. The total number of terms referencing women is more than twice as great as compared to those referencing men. The prefixes for Chinese referencing terms for lover ‘Nan- (男)’ and ‘Nü- (女)’ hold an equal standing, thus, they are different in nature from the marker in Chinese terms for addressing professions ‘Nan- (男)’ and ‘Nü- (女)’. Finally, the mode of coinage for Chinese terms of reference for lovers employs ambiguous expression, social decline of meanings, transliteration, and sense-for-sense translation. Newly coined terms are semantically characterized, often for referencing couples in illegitimate relationships, or homosexual lovers, for instance.

연인을 지칭하는 중국어 단어는 시대별로 다양한 유형이 있으며, 최근에는 연인에 대한 사회적 관념이 변화하고 이를 반영한 신조어가 유행하는 것을 볼 수 있다. 본고는 고대 중국어부터 현대 신조어까지의 자료를 수집하고 이에 기초한 분석 연구를 진행하여 다음의 내용을관찰하였다. 첫째, 중국어 연인 지칭어는 ‘小-’형 단어의 수량이 가장 많으며, 구조적 특징으로 접사는접두사형이 접미사형에 비하여 조어력이 높게 나타난다. 이중 접두사형은 ‘小-’가 가장 높고접미사형은 ‘-人’과 ‘-妾’이 가장 높다. 둘째, 중국어 연인 지칭어의 신조어의 생성 형태로 고유어는 중의법, 사회적 의미 하락 등을 사용하며, 외래어는 음역, 의역을 사용하거나 또는 음역과 의역을 함께 사용한다. 셋째, 중국어 연인 지칭어의 남녀 비대칭적 특징으로 여성을 지칭하는 단어의 전체 수량과접사의 종류는 남성에 비하여 약 2배 정도 많다. 이러한 점은 중국어 호칭어의 일반적인 특징과 비슷하다. 그러나 중국어 연인 지칭어의 접두사 ‘男-’, ‘女-’는 동등한 지위를 나타내어 중국어 직업 호칭어의 유표항 ‘男-’, ‘女-’와는 성격이 다르다. 넷째, 중국어 연인 지칭 신조어의 의미적 특징으로 불법적인 관계를 나타내는 경우의 단어가 자주 보인다. 또한 동성의 연인 관계를 지칭하는 신조어의 출현을 볼 수 있다. 이러한 의미범주에 속하는 단어의 출현은 새로운 계층의 출현과 확대, 자유로운 성 정체성의 표현 등의사회현상이 반영된 결과이다.
