An Empirical Study on the Relationship between Diversification Strategies and Managerial Performances by the general Trading Companies of Korea

The general approach adopted in presenting this thesis was an attempt to clearly identify both the depth of diversification of management pursued by the general trading companies of Korea during the five years between 1982 and 1986 and the degree of its impact upon the managerial performances. In formulating this problem I attempted to pinpoint the scope of different impacts upon the managerial performances made by the general trading companies of Korea, and exposed the problems created in the relationship between the diversification strategies and the managerial performances through theoretical and empirical analysis of the cause and effect relationship and a suggestion is made to improve the problem. Thus, the final purpose that this thesis attempts to achieve is to develop a new model for the diversified strategies that can be adopted by the general trading companies of Korea. The development of such a new model was made possible through an intensive research made on the possibility for the diversification of trade regions, products and functions. At the same time, the relationship between the systematization of subsidiaries of a business group and the business growth as the result of managerial performances as well as the relationship between business stability and business profit have also been analyzed for that purpose. In order to collect various data on the diversification strategies and the managerial performances made by the general trading companies of Korea, eight general trading companies were selected as the targets of my primary data research, and a personal interview with the top management executive was conducted, thus performing a field survey with questionnaires delivered. In addition, supplemental collection of data to augment insufficient research materials was made through various publications and statistics which were made available at Korea Traders Association, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Korea Business Information Institute, and Korea Institute for Economics & Technology. In order to collect research data on the general trading companies of Japan 1 made a trip to Japan and stayed there for 40 days. During my stay in Japan I was fortunate enough to get all the data needed for my research work. Included are the reports on the securities of nine SOGO-SHOSHAs and the data materials published by several SOGO-SHOSHAs of Japan, which were made available through the data reference rooms of Waseda University and Nomura Research Institute in Tokyo City. In this thesis, two hypothetical theses of I, and II are proposed, taking advantage of the method of statistic analysis through the quantitative data materials secured as above, the methods used to test the two hypotheses are plot chart observation method and stepwise multiple regression analysis method. The former is used for hypothesis I and the latter is used for hypothesis II. For the statistic streatment SPSS-Version X was used. The conclusion of this thesis may be summarized as follows; As an enterprise grows bigger both in size and scope it is bound to be internationalized, looking for new chances of business. The general trading companies of Korea can not be the exception and so, they have kept expanding their business by accelerating internationalization. They launched the diversified strategies as a means of dispersing business risks. There are four ways by which diversification of business management can be made. Namely, I) diversification of trade regions 2) diversification of products 3) diversification of function 4) systematization. The effect that can be expected from such diversified strategies depends on the managerial performances made by each diversified strategy. In other words, the diversified strategy for trade regions is the business strategy to be employed by the general ,trading company which is oriented toward the growth of business, whereas the diversified strategy of products should be followed by the general tradin
