This study investigated the perception of the meaning of exhibition contents by the audience based on structuralism and phenomenology. To do so, it examined narrative of museums and signification of exhibition space on a theoretical level within the context of structuralism. From the phenomenological viewpoint, it investigated the physical and phenomenological space and perception of audience as the subject of museum. The result was as follows: Compact Smart City narrates Incheon mythicized as a symbolic model of urban development, based on the meanings of Incheon, i.e., ‘optimal,’ ‘modern,’ ‘system,’ and ‘future.’ Exhibition contents that embody such meanings of space are perceived by the audience through phenomenological characteristics such as space, time, change, and imagination.

본 논문은 구조주의와 현상학에 기대어 전시콘텐츠의 의미가 관람객에게 어떻게 지각되는지 살펴보는 연구이다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 이론적 차원에서 박물관의 서사와 전시 공간의 의미작용을 구조주의적으로 살펴보았다. 현상학적 관점에서는 박물관의 주체로서 관람객의 신체, 현상학적 공간과 지각에 대해 살펴보았다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. Compact Smart City는 도시발전의 상징 모델로서 신화화된 인천을 서술하고 있다. 이러한 내러티브는 ‘최적’, ‘근대’, ‘체계’, ‘미래’ 등 인천의 의미를 토대로 전시콘텐츠로 구체화되고 있다. 공간의 의미들이 형상화된 전시콘텐츠를 체험하는 관람객은 장소, 시간, 변화, 상상 등의 현상학적 특성들을 지각할 수 있었다.
