Sigmund Freud's free association was originally invented and used for curing patients to express the unconscious drives and thoughts. The use of the free association contributes to boosting creative thoughts through aiding artists to express their unconscious ideas and representations more freely and uninhibitedly. This study aims to find and explain the theoretical ground and signification of the free association analyzing paintings, and fashion illustrations by the method of the free association in the process of design inspiration and ideas. In this study, I researched the paintings of the artists who used the free association and proposed three characteristics of it. Firstly, serial or continuous images appear through the association and interaction of similar forms and words. Secondly, the transference of ideas and representations takes place automatically or spontaneously when artists try to express their unconscious thoughts. Thirdly, the expression of memories comes out to the conscious world, when the past memories are combined to reality through the free association. I could also discover in the works of the painters who actively adopted Freud's theory that the above-mentioned three characteristics present five specific characters of their parts: transcendence of the space, deception of eyes, displacement of the various elements and ignorance of gravity. Through this study, I realized Freud's free association enables artists to perform more sophisticated work, releasing the unconsciously oppressed inner conflict and impulse to the conscious. I hope this method can be useful for artists in their work and especially, fashion illustration can be a tool to stimulate and actualize artists' imagination for discovering creative artistic motifs.

지그문트 프로이트의 자유연상법은 대다수의 인간이 어느 정도의 신경증과 강박증을 갖고 있다는 점을착안하여 심리치료에 활용되었으며, 그 적용의 범위가 확장되어 예술과 문학 등 창작 분야에까지 영향을 미치고 있다. 본 연구는 자유연상법과 예술 분야의 상호 관련성의 정립을 위하여 프로이트의 1차 정신기구 모델을 이론적 근거로 하여 자유연상법에 의한 패션일러스트레이션 작품의 이론적 토대를 마련하여 그 특성을해석하는 것이 목적이다. 프로이트는 무의식의 시각적 이미지인 꿈의 압축과 전치가 표상으로 전이되어 언어나 이미지로 연쇄적으로 나타나는 것을 밝혔다. 그리고 이러한 꿈의 요소들은 작가의 독창적인 예술창작의시발점으로 작용될 수 있다는 것을 알게 되었다. 자유연상법을 시도한 작품들로부터 고찰한 자유연상법의특성은 연쇄적 이미지, 표상의 전이 그리고 기억의 표출로 분류되었다. 첫째, 연쇄적 이미지는 유사한 형태나언어 등의 자극을 통해 연상이 연쇄적으로 발생하여 나타나는 것이다. 둘째, 표상의 전이는 심상의 이미지가표상으로 저절로 떠오르며 전이되어 나타나는 경우이다. 셋째, 기억의 표출은 과거 유년기의 기억이 자유연상을 통해 현실과 결부되어 의식의 세계로 발현되는 것이다. 이렇게 자유연상의 세 가지 특성은 작가들의작품에서 과거와 현재를 넘나드는 시공간의 초월, 내용이나 사물의 부재와 실재를 혼합한 눈속임의 효과, 대상에 유사한 형태나 의미를 대입한 다중적 요소의 전치, 다양한 이미지를 병치시킨 이질적 요소의 결합그리고 사고의 자유로운 흐름으로 비현실성을 극대화한 중력의 무시의 다섯 가지 시각적 효과를 보였다. 이러한 현상이나 특성들은 현대 패션일러스트레이션의 작품에도 상당히 수용되어 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 그러므로 이 자유연상법이 예술가들의 상상을 자극하여 독자적인 패션일러스트레이션을 창작하는 방법으로활용되기를 기대한다.
