An Analysis on the Economic Resilience of Taean after the Hebei Spirit Oil Spill Accident
초록
영어
The conceptual popularity of regional economic resilience has increased as various types of disasters and unexpected disturbances hinder regional economic performances. In this aspect, the present study analyzes the regional economic resilience of Taean that experienced the worst-ever oil spill in the country in December, 2007. For the research purpose, this study implements a quasi-experiment to isolate the effect of oil spill. By matching the region that suffered coastal contamination with otherwise similar regions unaffected by the oil spill, this study compares the economic performances of two groups through the changes in net population, the number of visitors, and GDP per capita. The results show that the performances of Taean were not statistically different from that of comparison group. Regional economic strategy utilizing local resources and financial support of governments are attributed to the substantial recovery from the oil spill.
