The purpose of this study is to examine the practical implications of the discourses on Donghak(東學) in Jo Jeong-rae' Taebaek Mountains. The process of this study is headed by Donghak(東學) discourse in the place of Beolgyo(地名) and Yureo(地名), and in the characters' dialogs. In Jo Jeong-rae' Taebaek Mountains, the place of Beolgyo and Yureo are meant by Donghak(東學) discourse. The Beolgyo is the Place of suppression that the landlord and tenant farmer's relationship is continued, and the Yureo is the Place of liberation that the Peasant troops develop the possibility for revolution. In Jo Jeong-rae' Taebaek Mountains, the Desire of the people for equality and the Desire of the people for mastery are opposing repeatedly. They are presented by the logic of enlightenment and the testimony of experience in Jo Jeong-rae' Taebaek Mountains. Finally, Jo Jeong-rae' Taebaek Mountains shows that the sprit of Donghak(東學) for the new world is the result from the Desire of the people for equality, the spring of the post-liberation partisan organization' action, furthermore our descendants of the endless tasks. The sprit of Donghak(東學) is working continuously in Jo Jeong-rae' Taebaek Mountains.

본 연구의 목적은 조정래의 『태백산맥』에 등장하는 동학 담론이 작품 전체 의미망에 어떻게 기여 하는지를 살피는 것이다. 이에 대해 본 연구는 『태백산맥』의 동학 담론의 생산 지형을 시대 담론과의 관계에서 먼저 살핀 후, 그 지형에서 생산된 조정래 『태백산맥』의 동학 담론이 서사의 의미망에 어떻게 기여 하는지를 고찰하였다. 그 과정은 서사에 등장하는 벌교와 율어라는 장소를 통해 발생하는 동학 담론, 그리고 인물들의 대화에서 등장하는 동학 담론을 중심으로 진행되었다. 『태백산맥』에서는 동학 담론을 통하여 벌교와 율어라는 공간이 의미화 되고 있다. 즉 벌교는 여전히 지주와 소작농의 관계가 변함없이 지속되고 있는 억압의 장소로, 율어는 지주의 억압에서 벗어나고자 한 동학군이 자신들의 혁명 가능성을 키워 나갔던 해방의 장소로 구체화 되고 있다. 『태백산맥』에서는 위계와 억압을 통해 이윤을 증대하는 지주/지배층의 수직적 욕망 그리고 위계와 억압에서 벗어나 평등 세계를 지향하는 소작인/피지배층의 수평적 욕망이 서로 길항하며, 계몽의 논리와 체험의 증언 속에서 등장하는 동학 담론을 통해 드러나고 있다. 결국, 조정래의 『태백산맥』은 동학을 피지배층 민중이 지닌 수평적 욕망의 실현이자 해방 후 빨치산 활동의 원류이며 나아가 이 땅의 후손들이 이어가야 할 과업으로 담론화한 작품임을 확인할 수 있었다.
